Words of Advice from Fernando Rocha | Torrens University

Words of Advice from CFO and current student, Fernando Rocha

Learn about our current Master of Professional Accounting (Advanced) student Fernando about why chose Torrens Uni.

Where are you originally from?

I’m originally from Brazil, and I arrived in Australia in February 2017. I decided to migrate here for a better place to raise my children, enjoy a better quality of life, explore a new culture, and consolidate my professional international experience.

Why did you choose to study at Torrens University?

When I was searching for a university, I found out that Torrens had a low teacher/student ratio which for me was important. Also, I graduated from my bachelor degree at a university in Brazil that is also part of the Laureate International Universities network, so, I knew the quality and reputation. Last, diversity of culture and nationalities among the students was another aspect that helped me decide to choose Torrens.

Which course did you study and when did you graduate?

I am currently studying a Master of Professional Accounting (Advanced) and will graduate in November this year. Even though I haven’t yet graduated, I already got a job in my field. Of course, my previous professional experience helped lot to seek and find a senior position in the finance and accounting industry here in Australia.

“Education is the key and the path for a better future. In fact, education brings a virtuous cycle that will benefit you and your future generations.”

Tell us about your current role. What does it involve and what does a ‘day in the life’ look like?

I’m a Chief Financial Officer – CFO for a company in the Finance Services industry in Adelaide. The company is ranked in the 7th position nationwide among its competitors.

In a day to day routine the major activities are:

  • I have several opportunities to make strategic decisions that impact directly in the company results
  • Manage a team and coach them according to the company culture and goals
  • Perform financial and accounting activities aiming to deliver the financial reports in a monthly basis
  • Conduct meeting with the senior management
  • Participate in a shareholders meeting
  • Meet with and report to the CEO.

To sum it up, the days are very busy, but I love it because no two days are the same.

What do you like most about studying at Torrens University?

I love the opportunity to interact with my fellow colleagues inside and outside the classroom. In addition, I also enjoy the opportunity and openness to share my thoughts and contribute to discussions and brainstorming during the lectures.

How do you think your degree will contribute to your future career success?

Before coming to Torrens, although I had already a consolidated professional career, I was not an accountant, so the Master in Accountancy has supported me to consolidate my knowledge in the field and it has also filled a gap that I had in my career.

“Fully immerse yourself in the journey and sharpen your skills in order to be ready for the challenges and opportunities that will come in your professional careers.”

What’s next for you in terms of your career?

Since I am already in a senior position, my main goal is to deliver outstanding results and build a solid personal reputation here in Australia. As part of the ‘corporate world’, I would love to have an opportunity to share my knowledge teaching students enrolled in business programs.

What words /motto do you live by (and why)?

I would never forgot the words that my father once told me. He said ‘Education is the key and the path for a better future. In fact, education brings a virtuous cycle that will benefit you and your future generations’.

I could not appreciate those inspirational words more; in fact, those words had a huge impact in my life, motivating me to graduate with a Bachelor of Economics in Brazil, a Master in Business in America, a strategy diploma program at Harvard University and finally, a Master in Accountancy at Torrens.

What advice would you give to students currently studying at Torrens University?

Take advantage of every single moment during the journey because every single experience is important. In addition, don’t be afraid to expose yourself and participate in the class discussions; indeed fully immerse yourself in the journey and sharpen your skills in order to be ready for the challenges and opportunities that will come in your professional careers.
