Challenge: creating a fashion accessory for Australian comedian Nina Oyama

When it comes to fashion, our students know their craft! 

In partnership with Punkee, we challenged our graduates to put the skills they learnt at Billy Blue College of Design at Torrens University Australia to the test.  

Enter Anna Anicic: a rising fashion star and Billy Blue graduate. Anna was tasked with creating a fashion accessory for Australian comedian Nina Oyama.  

If that wasn’t cool enough, she did it using only upcycled and leftover materials. Watch Nina’s reaction as Anna describes her creative process and showcases her pièce de résistance. 

“When you’re studying Branded Fashion Design at Billy Blue, you have the freedom to explore and try new things while getting the technical skills and support from the teachers at the same time,” says Anna, who founded her own sustainable fashion brand, ANICIC.  

Fashion students at Billy Blue learn the ins and outs of the industry, from designing clothes to selling them. We give them the skills to establish a brand, create a collection or dive into the business of fashion with their knowledge of managing commercial enterprises.   

Plus, our courses are designed together with industry. Which means our students leave here with the theoretical know-how, business insights and practical skills to launch a successful career. 

Steps to creating a sustainable fashion piece

To create your own sustainable fashion piece, follow Anna’s steps:  

1. Read the brief 
Understand the task at hand and begin ideating solutions to the proposed brief or creative problem. 

2. Conduct research and look for inspiration  
Plan your approach by researching ideas and finding inspiration for the design you want to create. 

3. Map out your design 
Based on your research, decide what you want to create and make sure it satisfies the brief.  

4. Experiment with your design 
This is the fun bit. Start creating your accessory by trialing different ideas to see what works best. What fabrics do you want to use? Are you more interested in form or function? Is your design appealing to others? 

5. Final product 
Whip it out and wear it with pride.
