A national competition in collaboration with our partner school Billy Blue College of Design and Runway Magazines was held last month in Australia across all of our Torrens University campuses.
For the competition, Runway Magazines a luxury magazine from Paris provided a referral for the chosen three winners to apply for their credentials on behalf of them and get an experience of a lifetime and attend Mercedes Benz Fashion Week resort ‘19 in Sydney.
Billy Blue created a viral Facebook campaign where students from across Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane were able to express their interest in participating in this national competition. The selection was done via a recorded video where our Industry Consultant for our Design school, Karen Carrillo Barrios drew out the three winners.

One of those winners was Charlotte Brader who is a scholarship winner currently studying Bachelor of Branded Fashion with Bachelor of Business in Brisbane.
How did you feel when you were selected?
I was so shocked and so excited when I was selected. I have never entered a competition based on ‘luck of the draw’ and expected to win so it came as a huge surprise. I was rushing between work and uni on the day it was announced and my friend actually saw the result before I did and messaged me. I was (and still am!) super excited as I have never attended Fashion Week. I moved interstate to attend Billy Blue as I felt there were no opportunities parallel to what is offered by the University or available where I grew up and this reinforces that.
How have you prepared for Sydney Fashion Week?
In preparation for Fashion Week, I have researched the designers who will be showcasing their collections and have observed the trends emerging which are evident on social media channels and in publications such as magazines. I have also been reviewing past trends in order to see if patterns emerge.
What are your initial expectations?
I have no idea what to expect as the whole experience will be so new to me. Through work, I have experience backstage at smaller fashion shows so I am excited to see a larger fashion show and understand all the effort and time that has gone into producing such an event. I imagine there will be an abundance of extremely fashionable influencers and professional and amateur photographers amassing in Sydney for the duration of the week. I am eager to network and witness so many incredible creatives gathered together for such an important event in the Australian fashion calendar.
Billy Blue College of Design has been launching the careers of thousands of design graduates since 1987. In 2015, Billy Blue teamed up with Torrens University Australia which means all their students will graduate with a university qualification.
