Now Reading: Wear it Purple Day

Wear it purple day

Dear Students and Staff,

This Friday, I encourage you to wear purple to help us celebrate diversity and inclusion.

Why should you wear purple?

Because every staff member, every student, every person that we touch through our work should feel included, safe, valued, and heard.

Wear It Purple Day has a simple mission: to create supportive, safe and accepting environments for rainbow, LGBTIQ+ young people Australia-wide.

I stand proudly with the LGBTIQA+ community, and I will always champion inclusivity.

I wear purple as the proud Mum of a beautiful queer son. I know firsthand how challenging it is to come out because of this journey in my own home. I know it is an emotional rollercoaster. I also know that even with supportive parents and supportive networks, it can be hard, especially when you are young, vulnerable, and feel marginalised.

Coming out is a brave act. Schools and workplaces are essential networks of support.

Let us not forget that many of our students find their voice and community when attending university. So, we must do everything in our power to ensure we are a safe and welcoming place.

I wear purple because many of our staff and students are queer and they have their supporters and friends right across our campuses.

Importantly, wearing purple is not just about celebrating our queer communities. It is about inclusivity in every sense of the word. We are currently revisiting many of our policies around inclusivity and diversity, including establishing an LGBTIQA+ strategy; I will have more to say about this in the coming days and months.

So this Friday, do join me in wearing purple.

There will be a Wear it Purple Afternoon Tea taking place at every campus in Australia. Your local campus director will have more details for you.
