“From the very first few classes, I knew I was being taught by professionals with excellent skills and who also really cared about our development.”

Join us as we sit down with our Bachelor of Business (Marketing) student who comes all the way from Chile!

What made you choose your course?

While working at an American restaurant in Chile, the Marketing manager showed me that I had the apability to get involved in this aspect of business.

What is the best part of your studies?

The best part of my studies is being able to develop in the career I love the most; get to know different cultures, and apply the technical knowledge I have gained in practical experiences.

Are you studying online or on-campus? What has the experience been like?

On campus. The interactive feedback from the lecturers and my classmates has no comparison to online classes. The experience has been incredible. What I’ve enjoyed the most is how the classes are taught and the experience of interacting with so many different cultures in one place.

Are there any subjects or lecturers that have stood out to you the most?

Sean Lees, Jo Cowan and Caroline Spaans. I can tell most people do not realize the human quality and the outstanding work of our lecturers. From the first classes I started attending, I knew I was being taught by professionals with excellent skills and who also really cared about our development. I had the privilege of getting to know Sean and Caroline and even got to work with Jo. Since I was really interested in learning more about the topics I was being taught, I found people willing to help me while also teaching me how to face the industry in real life.

What are your top tips for studying online and on campus?

First of all: go to class. Read your lectures, and organize your month according to your assignments due dates.

What is student life like?

I think it might be slightly different for an international student. To start my day with off right, I cannot miss talking to my family and friends. While in class, I take notes and participate in the discussion to get the most out of the lecture. Finally, I end the day talking to family and friends while having dinner.

What are your top tips for anyone living in Sydney?

Embrace the city’s multicultural population. Enjoy the restaurants and cafes. Get to know the wide variety of historic landmarks. Enjoy all the entertainment events. Make the most of any job opportunities that come your way.

What is your ideal job?

I haven’t had the opportunity to work in marketing yet, but my ideal job would be working for an important football club, which is something I’ve always been passionate about. Being able to make the most out of the environment, the travelling, the creative processes and the sports industry in general, while still learning.

What are some of the achievements you are most proud of?

I’m most proud of being able to successfully make a career far from home, by myself. Facing challenges that come with distance and cultural differences.

What is your favourite motivational quote?

“The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work.” – Michael Jackson

What hobbies do you do outside of work?

I’ve always been really passionate about anything sports related, not just performing the actual sport, but learning from it. Different teams, strategies, players, and designs.

What advice would you give someone who is considering studying at Torrens?

As everything in life, you need to find what you are passionate about. Once you do, success will follow along with self-fulfilment. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing tasks as fun and challenging rather than an obligation.

When will you graduate?

I’m supposed to officially graduate in 2020, but hopefully I’ll be able to take on more courses each semester so I can graduate earlier.
