5 Benefits of a Diploma

At this time of year there’s so much going on that it can be hard to make a decision about anything – let alone your future career.

If you are not yet 100% convinced on what career you want to get into – or your ATAR or your OP is lower than expected – a diploma may be the best way to move forward. Here’s just a few reasons why you should study a diploma in 2020.

1. Diplomas can be completed in significantly less time

University degrees require a minimum of three years of full-time study. Most Torrens University diplomas can be completed within one year. Due to the practical nature of our courses, the amount of time you spend learning and completing assignments is condensed but still prepares you for the workforce. With a diploma, you’ll reap the benefits of a qualification sooner.

2. Diplomas have less pre-requisites (no ATAR or OP)

Your future doesn’t have to be based on your ATAR or your OP. You can prove yourself at university by successfully completing a diploma. In many cases, you can use your course units to enter into a bachelor degree once you have finished your diploma. You’ll even get to graduate at the same time! Diplomas also have lower entry scores, so a year 12 certificate is usually the most critical pre-requisite, instead of the typical ATAR results or OP results needed for a degree.

UPDATE: ATAR is no longer our primary entry requirement. Find out more here.

3. Diplomas allow you time to explore different careers

Let’s say that you know you’re creative, but you’re not sure if you want to be a graphic designer or a fashion designer. A diploma is your best option. Study a Diploma of Design and take units in both areas to test yourself and your interest, then pursue the dream that’s right for you! What about if you want to study Business but you’re worried about the broad subject area? Again, consider a Diploma in Business or Marketing before choosing the specialisation that is right for you.

4. Diplomas make you job-ready faster

Traditional university degrees have a reputation for focusing on academic lectures and tutorials – knowledge that may not guarantee you the skills to get your first role. Diplomas have practical applications and give you the opportunity to learn and apply new skills. Once you are qualified, you will be able to apply your diploma to the job market, or alternatively, use it as a pathway to one of our degree courses with further hands-on opportunities available. In that case, no ATAR or OP would be required.

5. Learning is flexible

You’ve probably heard about the concept of online learning. Studying a diploma at university can often allow you to take some of your subjects online. Opt to take online courses only, or for a more blended study approach. This allows study fit into your life more easily, which frees up time to plan for your future. Think about how that could help you; with the hours you work, your social or family commitments or even building a portfolio for further study.

With the right qualifications, you’ll be able to plan your career choices and utilise your skills. Often, a diploma is the best answer to get your dream started without committing to too much and without needing a top ATAR or OP score. A diploma is also a brilliant option for those who are thinking of a career change!
