Congratulations to Brendan Fowler-Jones, our Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging student, for winning the Trimester 2 2020 Frame +Work Photography Competition. We spoke with Brendan to learn the story behind his winning photo.
Tell us about yourself and what you’re studying at Billy Blue College of Design at Torrens University Australia.
My name is Brendan Fowler-Jones, I am a 22 year old from South-Eastern Sydney [and studying a Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging]. I love nature, the outdoors and people, and I love to show these things in my photography.
What have you learnt from your studies that you used in your submission?
In my studies I have learnt many things, besides being able to comprehend my cameras abilities, I learnt to be able to understand my own abilities behind the camera. The ability to be confident in proper exposure, helps immensely when in a fast pace scenario such as this image shot on the streets. The most important thing I learnt was composure, how to correctly compose an image to bring it to its full potential.
Share with us the story behind your submission and what was your inspiration?
In the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal, a rooster is being held in a rusty cage, to be transported by bicycle to be slaughtered for either religious purposes or for food. My inspiration behind this photo is to show the different ways that humans have impact of wildlife and other living creatures.
What or who inspires you?
The drive to take better images, and to capture moments I couldn’t ever imagine is what inspires me. I try to find inspiration in the little things, the composition of the world around me and the art that is waiting to be photographed that others may walk past.
What are you passionate about? What keeps you driven?
I am passionate about photography focusing on photojournalism. I am passionate about animals, humans, nature and in turn, the effects humans have on nature and animals.
How has studying at Billy Blue allowed you to keep that passion alive?
Studying at Billy Blue has kept me passionate by letting me explore all aspects of the field of photography and give me the drive to make the most out of it.
What is the best part about studying at Billy Blue?
The best thing about studying at Billy Blue, is the intimacy; the small classes and passionate teachers.
How did you feel when you found out you won?
I was very happy to find out about being the winner, there were such a large array of incredible images entered and to have people see mine as an image worthy of winning is really empowering and helps to keep my passion burning.
What advice would you give to others who want to enter in the next Frame+Work Competition?
Don’t be afraid to enter, nothing bad can come out of it! I never thought about entering at first, but the first one I entered I ended up coming 3rd, this grew my excitement and gave me the drive to win one!
