1. About the Master of Business Information Systems

Master of Information Systems Management (MBIS) prepares students with advanced information systems skills and capacity to participate and lead in a multi-disciplinary team environment within a contemporary organisation. This course aims to equip information system professionals to appreciate the emerging trends, challenges and opportunities and navigate these through effective management and leadership capabilities. This course is underpinned by the philosophy that information systems professionals, should have the appropriate management and organisational skills alongside technological problem-solving ability to oversee the operational performance of complex data driven enterprise.  Hence, the MBIS course aims to prepare graduates with strong underpinning, skills and attributes in the information system and management domains. The curriculum design and delivery of this course aim to provide an opportunity for students to develop their lifelong learning abilities to work as a manager in a data driven organisation.

The MBIS curriculum ensures, student outcomes are greatly enhanced through the integration and application of real industry experience. The MBIS course at Torrens University Australia (TUA) will prepare students to undertake a range of management and leadership responsibilities in a data driven organisations by developing their analytical and synthesis skills. The overall teaching approach in the MBIS follows a student-centered approach that encourages students to have responsibility of their learning.  The MBIS curriculum will enable students to construct their own knowledge guided by their facilitators and learn to create and extend mental processes for solutions to problems. Information Systems professionals require business and technical skills as they are a conduit between the information technology specialists in business and the more business-oriented members of an organisation. The curriculum design of the MBIS is guided by an understanding of Information Systems, the requirements of business, project management, technical knowledge in databases and programming, data management and analytics. These concepts are underpinned by professional codes, ethical considerations and security.  The course is designed to create work-ready graduates who will contribute to the ever-growing role of an information systems professional in the digital economy.

Course Structure

The MBIS course structure comprises 16 subjects (160 credit points). The course of study is made up of:

  • Core subjects: There are 12 core subjects (120 credit points) found within the Master award
  • Elective subjects: There are four electives (40 credit points)

Course Rules

To qualify for the award of Master of Business Information Systems, the candidate must satisfactorily complete a course of study comprising 12 core subjects (120 credit points) and 4 elective subjects (40 credit points).  A combined total of 160 credit points is required.

Electives can be taken from the approved table below or any postgraduate subjects (AQF 8 and/or AQF 9) with prior approval from the Program Director.

PROJ6000 Principles of Project Management     

The process of creation, from conception through distribution, is complicated and requires a diverse set of management skills. Students in this course are introduced to the knowledge, tools, and techniques needed to manage projects (including IT projects) successfully throughout a project life cycle, and to the language used by practitioners in conjunction with the terminology recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students explore the project management knowledge areas and process groups of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) guide. Students also examine the ways these two dimensions of project management interact in initiating (scoping), planning, executing (launching), monitoring and controlling, and closing a project.

MIS500 Foundations of Information Systems    

This subject introduces students to the key concepts and technologies of information systems that drive change and support organisations to achieve strategic goals. This includes data and information management, application of business information systems, disruptive technologies and issues such as ethics, privacy and cyber security. This subject will prepare students to better understand the technologies that are disrupting and transforming society both now and into the future.

MIS501 Principles of Programming         

This subject introduces students to programming as a tool for developing systems and addressing business needs. Students will learn Unified Modelling Language (UML) and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to design, create, compile, test and run programs, applying object-oriented concepts to construct classes and methods to solve organisational problems. This subject will be tailored to student’s levels of expertise and expose students to an object-oriented programming language(s). Furthermore, it will equip students with the skills to assess and apply requirements in business environments.

MIS602 Data Modelling and Database Design   

Students will learn the importance of data to an organisation and the problems inherent in creating, storing, and managing that data. This subject will explore relational database design and modelling and students will learn how to handle data anomalies and the process of data integration. During this unit you will explore an organisation’s need for a data warehouse, learn about data visualisation and evaluate dashboard designs to view data. Students will examine the need for distributed data in today’s business environment.

MIS603 Microservices Architecture        

This subject introduces students to microservices architecture within the context of cloud computing models.   The emergence of these techniques of building applications is directly related to innovations in the areas of cloud computing and platforms.  In this subject, the focus will be on the evolution from more traditional approaches to microservices architecture.  Core concepts related to the principles and practices of microservices will be reviewed.

MIS604 Requirements Engineering        

Requirements management is a method of defining, using, modelling, documenting, maintaining, and measuring requirements throughout the software process. This helps developers explore requirements management and how it supports systems engineering and software engineering life cycles. Develop techniques for eliciting requirements and identifying good requirements. Represent requirements graphically by utilising powerful unified modelling language (UML) diagramming techniques. Develop skills to effectively manage requirements changes and techniques for measuring requirement quality through quantitative metrics.

MIS605 Systems Analysis and Design                                                                                                                                                                                                           

This subject introduces students to activities, techniques, and methodologies a systems analyst uses to design information systems that, when built, enhance the organisation’s ability to meet its business goals via available technology.  These include define requirements for system, model high-level behaviours of system, and design blueprint, that is, planning and implementation and will move through object-oriented approaches to analysis and design, the transformation of user requirements to system design.  User empathy is promoted in this subject, using the unified modelling language (UML).

MIS611 Information Systems Capstone                                                                                                                                                                                                      

This subject provides students with an authentic learning experience that allows them to draw on the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their course. They will actively contribute to a project team to deliver a business solution for a client. This subject includes a work integrated learning experience in which the knowledge and skills from the course will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context, where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to the experience. Students will undertake and be assessed on structured agile activities that allow them to learn, apply and demonstrate their professional practice, and be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations.

MIS607 Cybersecurity        

Information is a vital organisational asset. Information systems store, process and exchange information, and most economic sectors are dependent on electronic and automated systems. Interconnectivity is important for many organisations, but this also increases the exposure to adverse events, necessitating the need for thorough information security management. This subject builds upon fundamental information security concepts, including the management of information systems that affect organisational information security: identity management, authentication, access control, monitoring, risk management, incident response and disaster recovery. Since cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility, having the basic knowledge to prevent attacks, mitigate risk, and get up to speed with best practice cyber governance is an essential ingredient to succeed in today’s digital world.

MIS608 Agile Project Management                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Progressing from traditional project management frameworks this subject focuses on Agile project management, agile project management methodology, the principles of agile, and agile techniques. This subject will be based on a foundation of the 4 core values and 12 guiding principles of agile as laid out by the agile manifesto. Students will develop an understanding of agile concepts, tools and techniques: Scrum and Kanban, Roadmap planning, Program increments, Sprints and daily scrums and the agile roles within teams. Some of the leading agile frameworks will be discussed so that students have an understanding of some of the different philosophies, which support the agile continuous delivery pipeline.  Points of origin in Lean practice and the relationship between agile and DevOps will also be covered to help students orient themselves in the broader emerging landscape of projects and software development landscape.

MIS609 Data Management and Analytics

This subject teaches students techniques and best practices in collecting, storing, cleaning, manipulating, analysing, extracting, and visualising useful information from large, structured, semi-structured, or unstructured data sets, which are critical for organisational decisions. Students will also learn applications of big data management and analytics across industry sectors such as segmentation and prediction, churn prediction, recommender systems and targeted marketing, sentiment analysis, operational analytics, and ethical considerations.

MIS610 Advanced Professional Practice                                                                                                                                                                                                     

This subject is the culminating and integrating experience for the MBIS and ready students for graduation. Modules will include ethics, professional practice, legalities and compliance such as GDPR and governance. A final case-study project enables students to demonstrate their ability to think strategically and apply the concepts and tools learned in the subject to an organisation.
