How a graduate is transforming special needs education in India

St. Francis Christian Convent School

Meet Niti Pearl Goel from India, a Master of Education graduate from Torrens University who has taken big steps in establishing a more inclusive educational future for all children in India.

Undertaking a Master of Education (Special Needs) with Torrens University was a life-changing experience for Niti. “I have learnt the importance of understanding the needs of all students, and how to cater to them while adhering to global education standards”.

I am grateful to have found my calling as a special education teacher.

Once Niti graduated, she returned home to India where she realised that the Education community was not up to the quality standards to prepare children for the modern world; with a lack of curriculum to provide students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in today’s society. This motivated her to create a school in India – St. Francis Christian Convent School.

Opening a special needs school focused on practical learning

Niti initially established her school in 2009. However, her educational pursuits at Torrens University have provided her with the necessary skills to develop an interactive and hands-on curriculum that emphasises practical learning and fosters critical thinking. Niti found “the curriculum throughout my program at Torrens University was instrumental in preparing me to establish a special needs school dedicated to providing quality education to students.”

“My education at Torrens University Australia helped me gain extensive knowledge in creating an inclusive classroom”

Not only does Niti want to inspire her students and help them reach their full potential, she is also focused on building strong and effective teachers for the future. “In my school, I am committed to inclusive teaching and dedicated to meeting our students’ unique needs; therefore, I am focused on sharing these practices and knowledge with my team of teachers to promote inclusivity and diversity.”

"I am immensely thankful to Torrens University for teaching me the skills to create an inclusive and successful learning environment; ultimately preparing me to establish a special needs school.”

Niti’s school has become a beacon of hope for underprivileged children who may have otherwise been denied the opportunity to receive a quality education.

As a teacher, Niti says “my work is never finished, and I remain committed to continuing to build on our achievements, working together to prepare our students for success in the future.”

Master of Education (Special Needs) graduate

Niti’s story is an inspiration to many young people who aspire to make a positive impact on their communities. For anyone who is unsure about commencing their study journey, Niti shares, “I believe that every person, regardless of their abilities, has the potential to achieve great things.”
