Letisha Germain, the lecturer at Torrens University with over 10 years’ experience in the Dermal/Aesthetics Industry specialising in corrective skin treatments and education is sharing her top 10 tips for looking after your skin in the colder months.
1. Avoid hot showers
The heat during hot showers can strip the natural oils found in your skin. Stick to lukewarm showers to avoid excessive moisture loss in the skin.
2. Exfoliate and moisturise
Use a soft bristle body brush prior to your shower. It will help to lift dry skin and increase circulation which also helps to improve the appearance of cellulite.
Moisturise immediately following your shower, the dampness left on your skin will help to preserve moisture in your skin. Dermalogica Body Hydrating Cream helps to hydrate the skin with natural extracts from Lavender, Patchouli and Orange essential oils combined with Green Tea to soothe the skin.

Heating systems just like air conditioning strip humidity from the air which dries out the skin. Invest in a small humidifier to put moisture into the air.
4. Essential oils
Essential oils have been used for centuries to help promote health and well-being. Here are some suggestions to diffuse in your humidifier.
- Feeling stressed? Diffuse lavender.
- Need to clean the air? Add tea tree.
- Dry skin throughout winter? Use sandalwood.
We love indulging in those extra cups of tea, but remember to keep your water intake up throughout winter as the caffeine will dehydrate your skin. Aim to drink between 1.5 – 2L and remember a hydrated digestive system = a hydrated skin! Try a delicious Crème Brule tea from T2 to indulge in a warming brew whilst hydrating your skin from the inside.
“Oranges are packed with vitamin C that helps to soothe your skin and Bananas contain potassium which is essential for hydration in winter.”
6. Feed your skin
Continue to eat fresh fruit and vegetables throughout winter to receive crucial vitamins and minerals. Oranges are packed with vitamin C that helps to soothe your skin and Bananas contain potassium which is essential for hydration in winter. Enjoy those delicious soups and casseroles that have incredible benefits to your immune system and digestive health.
As the seasons change so should your skin care regime, adjusting your products each season will aid in the effectiveness of your products. Opt for a heavier cream at night that contains ceramides to keep your skin hydrated and protected.
8. Exfoliation is key
Remember to exfoliate, using an enzymatic exfoliator will help to adhere and lift dry and flaky skin. Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask will leave your skin feeling soft and supple in winter by gently lifting the dead skin cells and impurities. Don’t forget to apply an overnight mask to allow your skin to repair itself and regenerate fresh skin cells.
9. Protect your skin
Carry a chapstick with you to prevent dry lips and avoid having your skin directly exposed to the wind. Cover up if you need to or apply moisturiser before heading out into windy days to prevent dry, flaky skin. Don’t forget your hands! Carry with you a rich hand cream to apply after washing your hands to prevent cracked knuckles.
10. Speak to a specialist
Book in with your Dermal Therapist and speak to them about how you can prepare and protect your skin throughout winter. While you’re there why not indulge in a massage? It will help to increase circulation and cardiovascular activity without going to the gym! Based in Brisbane or Sydney? Why not see one of our amazing students at the Wellbeing Centre.
