What to expect

Still deciding which creative course or career to aim for? Spend a day with us, at Uni, and discover what a day in the life of a design or gaming student is REALLY like. Our workshops are free, and an ideal way to get a feel for what you like, what you don’t like and where you might see yourself in the future. You won’t know until you try!

On the day you will:

  • Participate in a workshop of your choice run by our talented University design & gaming lecturers.
  • Get a glimpse into our classrooms, and tour the campus
  • Hear from students about their experience studying with us
  • Enjoy a free lunch to keep those creative juices flowing

Workshop Types:

  • Communication (Graphic) Design Workshop
    In this workshop participants will:

    • Find out about different career pathways in Communication (Graphic) Design.
    • Explore what a typical working day looks like for a Graphic Designer.
    • Through a group activity you’ll form your own ‘hot shot’ studio and create branding for a tech startup company.
    • Learn about creating new ideas and applying them to logo design and imagery

    Sonia is a lecturer at Billy Blue and an award winning Melbourne based illustrator / artist who has been teaching classes at Billy Blue since 2012. “What particularly draws me to the field of Illustration Art is that it can be very clever and inspiring – it can draw a multitude of ideas together and tell a story through (sometimes) one single image. “ Her work really speaks for itself http://www.soniak.com/

  • Interior Design workshop
    In this workshop participants will:

    • Reflect on and respond to an Interior Design Brief
    • Research and select finishes and furniture
    • Produce and present a concept for a given space

    Robyn McDonald is a lecturer at Billy Blue and a professional Interior Designer with a background in art and design education. She has a passion for stimulating and challenging individual’s interest and creativity in both the technical and creative aspects of the industry.

  • Branded Fashion workshop
    The Branded Fashion Design workshop explores fashion forecasting and how designers use it to develop collections. Participants get to use research and inspiration to design their own fashion looks.

    Rebecca Gully is a fashion design lecturer at Billy Blue and fashion practitioner with extensive fashion industry experience with seventeen years in tertiary fashion education. She is passionate about mentoring emerging designers and has previously completed a post graduate study of her own which explored nostalgia, memory and the designer’s sense of place. She has written and published on collecting and wearing vintage clothing, and contemporary fashion design pedagogy. Specialist areas: intimate apparel and swimwear design; fashion design pedagogy; product development; mid-20th century popular culture and clothing Rebecca’s goal is to inspire, lead, inform and encourage creative entrepreneurship.
  • Photo Imaging Workshop
    In this workshop participants will be introduced to the exciting field of food and product photography, going behind the scene of a real life commercial food shoot.

    David Ewing is a professional photographer offering a wide range of photographic services including event, fashion, corporate and specialist services like aerial, time-lapse and slow-motion footage. David shot for recognised clients across the world and is also an experienced trainer.
  • Games/Digital Media Workshop
    In this hands on workshop participants will get a demonstration in 3D modelling techniques for games and how will learn how assets are brought into a game engine using software Unity and Substance Painter

    Emily Duggan is a freelance game artist and designer who has worked at the Girls Make Games camp and The Lab video game club as a mentor. She works at a video game company called Tantalus, doing quality assurance on console games like Cities: Skylines and Stellaris.

    • Artificial Intelligence/Cloud computing
      The tech industry is changing by the minute; concepts and technology we could only have imagined a couple of years ago are now part of our daily lives. In this workshop you will be introduced to the concepts of AI and Cloud Computing such as machine learning, Natural Language Processing, Robotics, Data Science, Human Centred Design and DevOp.

      Presenter: Pasangi Wickramarachchi is a Client Technical Leader for IBM Global Markets helping clients drive change and transformation on a large scale by harnessing the power of emerging technologies.
