The Official Torrens University social media channels are spaces for our diverse and global community to connect, share ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations about education, research, and university life. By participating in these social media channels, you agree to follow these guidelines to ensure a respectful, lawful, and inclusive environment:

Torrens University social media pages are designed to:

  • Share updates, news, and insights about Torrens University.
  • Provide a platform for questions, discussions, and community engagement.
  • Celebrate achievements and foster collaboration.

Views expressed by community members on the Torrens University social media channels do not represent the views of Torrens University. Torrens University is not responsible for the accuracy or reliability of content posted by parties other than those approved by the University’s Marketing and Communications staff. Content created on Torrens University social media channels that has not been approved by authorised Marketing or Communications officers, and is shared by staff on official channels, reflects their personal views only and does not represent the University’s position.

Monitoring Hours

Our social media accounts are monitored Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM AEST/AEDT, excluding public holidays and the period between Christmas and New Year.
If you need assistance outside these hours, please send us a direct message, and we will respond as soon as possible.

Community Guidelines

By engaging with our social media channels, you acknowledge and agree to follow the rules and guidelines set by each platform.

We encourage open dialogue and academic freedom in compliance with the applicable laws. To maintain a safe and welcoming environment, we reserve the right to hide or remove posts and comments that include:

  • Harmful or unlawful content as defined under the Online Safety Act 2021, including cyberbullying, harassment, threats, or incitement of violence.
  • Offensive, abusive, or discriminatory language or materials (including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, ableism, or sexually inappropriate content).
  • Spam, advertisements, petitions, or promotional content unrelated to Torrens University.
  • Personal information of others (e.g., names, addresses, phone numbers, email) in breach of Privacy Act 1988.
  • Content prohibited by court order the law generally or the Privacy Act 1988
  • Intellectual property violations – (please credit original creators when sharing content).
  • Comments unrelated to Torrens University or the topic of discussion.
  • Links encouraging academic misconduct (e.g., essay writing or cheating services).

Freedom of Speech & Academic Freedom

Torrens University supports respectful debate and diversity of opinion. We will not remove comments simply because they are critical or express disagreement. However, comments may be removed if they:

  • Incite hatred, harassment, or violence.
  • Make any individual or group feel unsafe or unwelcome based on protected attributes under anti-discrimination laws.

Critical Incident & Escalation Procedures

This section applies only to critical incidents such as threats to safety, self-harm indicators, criminal activity, and high reputational risks.

  1. Acknowledge receipt of complaint, capture URL, timestamp, screenshots.
  2. Temporarily remove or restrict visibility if risk is high.
  3. Consult Legal within 1 business day.
  4. Decide on response (restore, edit, permanent removal, apology/correction).
  5. Document actions and retain records.

We will comply with eSafety Commissioner directives for removal of harmful content.

Official accounts must display CRICOS and TEQSA provider codes for compliance.

All staff managing social media must complete mandatory training.

Governance & Compliance

This social media terms of use statement aligns with the Australian University Legislative and Regulatory Framework, including:

  • Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF) compliance.
  • TEQSA and ESOS Act requirements.
  • Privacy Act 1988 and Copyright Act 1968.
  • Accessibility standards (WCAG compliance for images, captions, and inclusive language).

All official accounts must be approved by the Marketing team and comply with branding guidelines.
