3 reasons to study Event Management

Are you considering studying Event Management, but you’re not sure if it’s the right degree for you? Everyone has their own unique interests, and it’s these which often lead us down our career path. Perhaps you love bringing people together, or you’re passionate about music. If so, there could be a career in event management waiting for you.

The best advice you can get on what course to choose often comes from the students themselves.

Meet two Torrens University Australia students, Lorenzo Quattrola and Chelsea Wright. They came to the university several years ago, from two very different backgrounds.

“I grew up in Rome. I come from a middle-class family; my mum was a secretary and my father a plumber. After spending many years traveling in several countries, I decided to come and study here in Australia, because of the level of education and the opportunities that could come from completing a degree in this country.”

“I live in Newcastle. I just recently moved back home to a little town called Stockton. I am the youngest of 3 siblings. My sister is an interior designer, and my brother is the Director of Arts at a school.”

Chelsea’s background is in retail, whereas Lorenzo came from hospitality. Chelsea is from the country in Australia, while Lorenzo is from busy Rome. But, they both share a love for creating really fantastic experiences for other people.

It’s this passion that brought them to Torrens University.

1. You get to make people happy, do something social, and be part of some great festivals (while working!)

“I always enjoy making people happy, and delivering great customer service. After many years in hospitality, I needed career development. I always love festivals, music and being socially active, so I thought that event management would be a great way to start a different career.”

When it comes to choosing a degree, passion is essential. But, you’ve also got to be realistic, and take a look at the industry landscape. Is your field growing? Are there going to be opportunities for work, when you graduate? What skills will I need to develop, and which ones do I already have?

These are all important questions to ask yourself when you’re considering different courses.

2. Challenge yourself to learn a whole new set of skills, and become great at what you do best.

Event management requires you to problem solve under pressure and think on your feet. When you study and practice event management in your working life, you develop a whole set of personal, logistical and ‘soft’ skills that are transferable across many industries.

The Bachelor of Business (Event Management) at Torrens includes content such as organisational structures and cultures, marketing strategies, legal frameworks and even the ‘journey mapping’ techniques used to track customer experience.

“One day I decided I wanted a new challenge, so I wrote down my strengths and skills, and the top three jobs I would like to do. My sister told me I would be great at event management, and her knowing me the best, I looked into it and decided to give it a go.

I finished a Diploma of Event Management, and decided to transfer to a Bachelor of Marketing. I loved and excelled in the marketing subject, and it was something I wanted to learn more about. The course is going great, and I study it purely online. I love it as it is so flexible, I can even do it from my own bed!”

3. It’s a growth industry with diverse roles.

Fortunately for Lorenzo and Chelsea, event management is a booming industry in Australia. It currently generates around $8 billion in revenue each year, and it’s growing by an estimated 4.8% annually. There are more than 33,000 people already working in this field, with more jobs to come!

Not only is it booming, but the field is also broad enough to encompass a wide variety of positions and events. You can find your own niche in corporate conferences or arts festivals, plus you can try different roles or climb the ladder. There’s never a reason to be bored when you have lots of options.

“My dream job is to work as operational manager for the ‘Byron Bay Bluesfest', which is one of the best organisations I have seen so far. I’ve been volunteering for them for years now, and I have never seen an organisation that tries to be as sustainable as possible, look after their employees and deliver one of the most memorable experiences to their customers.”

“I would love to have a job that is events and marketing blended. I am considering experiential marketing or retail marketing. Although my ultimate dream would be to own a property with a beautiful venue that does high teas during the week, and holds weddings and events.”
