In the first trimester of 2022, Bachelor of Business IND201A (Industry Engagement Project) students were asked to collaborate on a student project for their class. After exploring and then pitching their ideas to a 'Shark Tank style panel comprising of their Learning Facilitator and Subject Coordinator, ‘Steps4Relief’ project was selected as the class focus.

The subject's Learning Facilitator, Ladan Ocora, said that the purpose of the project was to raise funds for the thousands of Australians impacted by the recent floods in NSW and QLD. The students researched a wide range of charities and decided to choose the Australian Red Cross. They created a GoFundMe site, a Facebook page and Instagram promotions.

Students across Australia and the globe unite for a good cause

Over a weekend in April 2022, 25 students from all around Australia and even as far afield as Spain joined the fundraising effort, setting personal step or run goals and reaching out to family, friends, and colleagues for support.

“From the north of Spain, we have joined this initiative, going for a walk and contributing a donation to our Australian friends,” said one participant named Dani.

Other students formed walking groups and used Steps4Relief as a chance to explore their cities.

One of the participants, Elizabeth, describes her experience as very impactful.

Not only did we get to spend some quality time together, but we got to have a lovely walk around Lavender Bay in Sydney and at the same time we got to help the community affected by the floods. Thanks to the Torrens University students for organising such an impactful event,” she says.

Fundraising directly to the flood relief efforts

So far, the group has raised more than $1300 which will go directly to the Red Cross to support the flood recovery effort.

“Fundraising is a wonderful way to connect the world for good,” said Subject Coordinator Dominika Ohana.

“The whole subject IND201A is focussing on students’ soft skills- team work, problem solving, proactiveness, communication, and so on. A fundraising project like this is an effective way to engage our students and repurpose their energy towards a cause, which in turn can benefit the larger community.”

We are so proud of our students and cannot wait to see what exciting projects they produce in T2.
