Our Commitment to Equality

here for good torrens university

We write in solidarity, in support and in response to events which started in the United States, but have since spread across the globe amplifying the issue of systemic racism.

We write in solidarity, in support and in response to events which started in the United States, but have since spread across the globe amplifying the issue of systemic racism. Watching events unfold has been hard, but understanding the deeper roots of why it is happening has been devastating.

We are part of Laureate International Universities, with institutions and operations in both the United States and Latin America, including Minneapolis where George Floyd’s life was brutally taken from him. We stand behind Laureate Education and the response Eilif Serck-Hanssen, the President and CEO of Laureate Education Inc., penned in response to the events that have unfolded.

Racism and the oppression of any peoples or any community has no place in our world. Sadly, the injustices that people are fighting for in the US plague Australia and New Zealand as well. Brutality and violence against our Indigenous peoples, and other minorities, is often ignored or justified. And now, with our borders being closed for COVID-19, dangerous and hateful rhetoric is often used by our leaders under the justification of “Australia first”.

We want our community at Torrens University, Think Education and Media Design School to know that we will support each one of you, whether a student, staff, or member of our community – especially our vulnerable and underrepresented.

However, words are meaningless without action. We believe that we are Here for Good, meaning we are here for both purpose and permanence. But as we have reflected on the events that have unfolded over the last week, it is clear we have a lot of work to do. We are committed to looking within ourselves to be better advocates, to have difficult conversations, and to dig deep to uncover biases and processes that may perpetuate racism and stereotypes, not just in our business operations, but also in how we teach our students.

This is our commitment.

Take care, stay safe and Be Bold.
