Student spotlight: What's it like studying Hospitality Management

Jenill Vadera Hospitality Management student

If you dream of reaching for the stars, you won’t be alone at Torrens University Australia.

Jenill Vadera, an international student from India, says that studying a Bachelor of Business in Hospitality Management has opened doors for him in a big way.

International students who decide to study with us can realistically consider a wide range of career options such as restaurant manager, food & beverage supervisor, banquets supervisor, and front office agent. Jenill plans to gain a few years of work experience in Australia before moving back to his home country. So, how did he get to where he is today?

It started with the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management

Jenill originally completed his Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management at William Blue at Torrens University about 10 years ago. It gave him great exposure to the hospitality industry. Jenill even managed to secure a job at the famous Sydney Opera House while completing his studies.

All thanks to this Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management, Jenill was lucky enough to work in a range of different countries in a variety of different positions. His most recent experience was as a Café Manager in the UAE, before deciding to study again.

Engaging in further study at Torrens University

Considering everything he learnt while studying at William Blue, the decision to study with Torrens University again was an easy one. What he was not expecting however, was that he would be studying online rather than face to face, as a result of Torrens University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jenill spoke about his unique experience:

“Initially, I was not a big fan of studying online as I believed that face to face lectures were more interactive. Now that I’m studying online, I have definitely been proven wrong. All the lecturers are very attentive and informative, and they make the classes as interactive as they would in a face to face scenario.”

Support & assistance

At Torrens University, every single student has access to a Success Coach. These professionals will be your biggest cheerleaders throughout your studies, helping you to reach your goals.

“The Success Coaches are fantastic, and the knowledge they have gained from working in the industry is incredibly insightful,” Jenill told us.

A modern approach to learning & life

Jenill’s online learning experience has given him a range of transferable skills, and he has praised our system’s ease of use.

The Blackboard platform is quite attractive and has so many features, but it is very easy to understand and use,” he said.

Jenill believes his time at Torrens University has prepared him well for a career in today’s ever-changing hospitality industry, saying:

“Things have certainly changed and in my opinion, they have improved a great deal. All of my tutors are from the industry, and their knowledge and experience is invaluable to us as students. The subjects in the course are very practical and based on what you would be doing when you are working in industry. I honestly think this degree will open up many opportunities for me.”

Ultimately, Jenill hopes to gain some experience working for some leading hotel chains before eventually moving back to India.
“It has been a very rewarding experience so far and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens after I graduate.”
