General English (Elementary to Advanced)

At Torrens University Australia, we are committed to helping you through your study journey. This General English program will equip you with a set of English language skills directly related to your future study, basic study skills which will help you adapt to the academic environment and introduce you to the Australian culture.

The course covers:

  • Speaking skills and strategies (including conversation and basic formal presentation skills)
  • Vocabulary development
  • Listening skills and strategies (including listening for gist and detailed information)
  • Reading skills and strategies (including skimming, scanning and reading to evaluate and discuss)
  • Extensive reading
  • Grammar workshops
  • Pronunciation workshops
  • Tasks and projects
  • Writing skills and strategies (including writing for the workplace)
  • Basic research skills
  • Basic study skills

Students can also progress into our Direct Entry Programs (DEP) or English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses to then succeed in the vocational or higher education course of their choice at Torrens University Australia.

Workload and Assessment

No. of timetabled hours per week:

20 hours per week classroom study. ELICOS students must attend 80% or above of scheduled contact hours within the study period.

Typical assessment includes:

Assessment of the General English course is continuous and includes:

  • Weekly grammar and vocabulary revision tests

  • A range of tasks based on speaking, reading, listening and writing skills

Final assessment is made on the basis of:

  • Learner’s performance

  • Written and oral assignments

  • Listening and reading tasks

  • Grammar and vocabulary revision tests

  • Overall participation in class
