What is English for Academic Purposes?

English for Academic Purposes will develop your English language skills and prepare you for university entry. This course is designed to help you adjust to university in Australia and equip you with the English proficiency and academic skills necessary to undertake a higher education degree.

We cover topics such as research skills, paraphrasing and summarising, referencing and academic integrity. There is continued focus on improving your skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as language development work. Learning outcomes

Students who do not meet the English language requirements of their degree or diploma program at Torrens University.
Students wanting to extend their written and spoken language to enable them to study effectively in their chosen course and use English independently outside the classroom in a broad range of situations, both formal and informal.

Key language areas

Each program requires 20 hours of classroom study per week. ELICOS students must attend 80% or more of scheduled contact hours within the study period.

English for Academic Purposes 1 and 2 (Intermediate to Advanced)

Speaking

Students are comfortable speaking and elaborating on different topics. They can ask for clarification and develop presentation skills.
Listening

Students can identify specific information and support ideas from long passages, engaging with various mediums and making critical comments.
Reading

The focus for students will be to locate specific information in a range of literature and evaluate information sources.
Writing

Students will be able to plan and write a discussion piece, understand different writing structures and write objectively.

International students must not enrol in more than one-third (33%) of online subjects over their course, and must study at least one face-to-face subject each study period. For more information, visit Study in Australia.

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy one of the entry requirements below.

Minimum academic IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.

Guaranteed pathway and Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have already completed a qualification or gained skills through life or work experience, you may be able to credit this against your degree with us. Course fees can be paid across three study periods. Each instalment to be paid before the beginning of the academic stage census date.
