What is English for Academic Purposes?

Develop your academic English language skills and prepare for university entry and success. This course has been specifically designed to prepare students for university, in a supportive and friendly environment. On successful completion of our English for Academic Purposes course, you will have the academic skills necessary to progress into a higher education degree in Australia.

Workload

Each program requires 20 hours of classroom study per week. ELICOS students must attend 80% or more of scheduled contact hours within the study period.

    Students will be able to communicate with some confidence, express personal opinions and thoughts, and check, confirm and exchange information on topics.

    Listening

    Students will be able to understand straightforward factual information and main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters and identify general messages and specific details.

    Reading

    Students will be able to read straightforward factual texts on subjects with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

    Writing

    The focus for students will be to write straightforward connected texts, personal letters and convey information and ideas on abstract as well as concrete topics.

    Communicative language competence

    Students will be able to introduce and collaborate with people from different backgrounds.

    Communication strategies

    Students will be able to intervene in discussions on familiar topics and initiate, maintain and have simple face-to-face conversations.

    Working with text

    The focus for students will be to convey information and main points in clear and well-structured texts.

  • English for Academic Purposes 2 (Advanced)

    Speaking

    Students are comfortable giving clear, detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that allows for regular interaction and sustained relationships with speakers.

    Listening

    Students will understand the main ideas of complex speech and follow extended speech.

    Reading

    The focus for students is to read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different text and purposes.

    Writing

    Students will write clear, detailed texts on a variety of subjects and express news and views effectively in writing.

    Communicative language competence

    Students will work collaboratively with people from different backgrounds, developing other people’s ideas, posing questions, inviting reactions, making suggestions and establishing a supportive environment for sharing ideas.

    Communication strategies

    Students will be able to intervene appropriately in discussion, use a variety of strategies to achieve comprehension and give feedback, and help the development of a discussion.

    Working with text

    Students will be able to convey detailed information and arguments reliably, as well as the main content of long, well-structured and complex texts on subjects, clarifying the opinions and purposes of speakers.
