APAC accreditation means your degree is recognised by industry bodies and opens clear pathways for further study and registration as a psychologist.

This announcement explains the significance of APAC accreditation, how it affects both prospective and current students, and the next steps towards becoming a registered psychologist.

What is the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council?

The Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) is the independent accrediting authority for psychology education in Australia.

To become a registered psychologist in Australia, you must complete a degree at an institution with an APAC-accredited course. APAC ensures that these qualifications meet the educational requirements for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). In other words, APAC accreditation is a quality stamp that shows a program aligns with national expectations and professional competencies.

Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accreditation

We are proud to share that our Bachelor of Psychological Science is now fully accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. This means that all students enrolled in this course, backdated to Trimester 1 2024, are covered under this APAC accreditation.

This milestone benefits both current and future students, as it confirms the course meets the national standard required to progress in the psychology profession. With this accreditation, you can be confident that you are eligible to pursue postgraduate training and registration.

APAC accreditation shows that our curriculum, teaching staff and facilities have been rigorously reviewed and approved by Australia’s peak accreditation body for psychology – great news for you as a student.

So, which accreditation is best for psychology? In Australia, APAC is the most important accreditation to look for when considering a degree. There are other professional bodies involved in psychology, such as the Australian Psychological Society (APS), but APAC’s approval is the standard required for education providers.

Psychology registration pathway

One of the most common questions students have is about the registration process to become a psychologist.

To become a registered psychologist in Australia, you have to start with an APAC-accredited course such as our Bachelor of Psychological Science, plus an honours year.

On completion, you can choose to either:

  • Do further APAC-accredited postgraduate study, such as a Master of Psychology or a combined Master/PhD program.
  • Take the 5+1 pathway, which involves five years of study (including honours or a graduate diploma) plus one year of supervised practice. This path requires you to pass the national psychology exam before you can for general registration.

Having an APAC-accredited undergraduate degree is the first step for both pathways.

What does this mean for you

If you're thinking about studying psychology, enrolling in an APAC-accredited course like the Bachelor of Psychological Science at Torrens University sets you on the right track from the start. For current students, the recent APAC approval means your degree now holds national recognition, opening the doors for postgraduate study and professional registration.
