Design your future with a Communication Design course

femalestudent

Valentina Marin Sanchez, a current international student from Colombia, studying Bachelor of Communication Design at Billy College of Design at Torrens University Australia.

Studying at Torrens University has opened my eyes to infinite possibilities, opportunities and things that now inspire me so much. Having the opportunity to be in a creative environment like this makes me dream more, and understand that anything can be possible. In design, the craziest idea can turn in a hugely successful project. The only limits are in your head.

Since first visiting Australia to study English, Valentina fell in love with Sydney and all the opportunities it has to offer. She saw a future for herself staying here for further studies and took the opportunity to study a Bachelor of Communication Design at Billy Blue College of Design at Torrens University Australia.

During her degree, Valentina began working part-time at TerraCycle, a social enterprise that specialises in recycling hard-to-recycle waste. Her passion for nature coupled with her entrepreneurial spirit led her to start her art business Vilarte. She also had the opportunity to create this mural for Foresense Technologies.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you are originally from.

I am originally from Colombia and have been here in Sydney for 3.5 years now.

What made you decide to study with us? Why did you choose this course?

I was supposed to come here for one year to study English, but I fell in love with the city and all the opportunities that I found here. I went to a Torrens University Open Day and discovered the Communication Design course. I really liked the campus and the environment. It is a place that really inspires you and has everything to make you succeed. Now, three years later, I feel the exact same way about my university.

What inspires you to make art?

My biggest inspiration is nature, basically anything that surround us. I often find magic in the smallest details that we often forget and take for granted. That is the biggest purpose behind my art, to really appreciate the details, colours and the expressions of animals etc.

How has your time as a student so far helped you improve your skills to find a job you love after you graduate? Tell us about any opportunities you have had to do any internships, work-integrated learning, or live briefs.

Studying here has given me so many opportunities to challenge myself and to give more than what they ask for. Looking at past students really inspires me to follow their paths and to aim higher.

The subjects I learnt here have helped me so much to upscale my current art business, how to reach new clients and be more professional.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

I hope to get experience from a design studio and then I would like to make a living from my own business. My dream job would be travelling to paint murals, open a stationery shop (all designed and painted by me) and be a full-time artist.
