Subjects and units

Delivered both on campus and online, the Undergraduate Certificate of Business (Pathway) comprises of 3 core and 1 electives, each subject requiring 10 hours of study per week; three hours facilitated and seven self-directed. Assessments may include activity-based assignments or online quizzes. There are no formal exams.

Requirements

These three core subjects must be completed. Additionally, you’re required to select one elective from the electives tab. You must successfully complete Academic Skills in Context TUL101 in your first Trimester before progressing on to any remaining subjects in Trimester 2.

This subject develops your academic skills in a practical, guided, and supportive environment, while increasing your understanding of who you are as a learner and how to navigate university life effectively. You will learn to communicate your ideas in an academic environment, using formats relevant to your discipline and future professional contexts. You will practise reading and evaluating information, appropriately acknowledging sources, and integrating different perspectives to strengthen your thinking. You will reflect on your learning, set goals, and develop effective study strategies. The subject also provides opportunities to collaborate, contribute respectfully, and work toward shared goals in varied learning contexts.

Throughout Academic Skills in Context, you will receive feedback and learn how to use it productively to improve your performance. You will also be introduced to key academic support services to assist your ongoing learning.

By the end of the subject, you will be more confident in your academic skills, better prepared for future subjects, and more connected to the university community.

This subject will introduce the academic literacy knowledge and skills necessary for both effective learning and for shaping your future career in a business context. You will be exposed to a range of business texts, scenarios, and environments to develop your capacity to learn, think critically, communicate effectively, and act with integrity both academically and professionally. Consequently, you will gradually build skills in locating and evaluating information, reading and note-taking, as well as integrating evidence to construct well-substantiated arguments and paragraphs.

Understanding Self and Others | BIZ107

The ability to work well with others is a critical skill for the contemporary dynamic and diverse workplace. Underlying this skill is your understanding of yourself and of others. This subject will introduce you to the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) in order to develop your skills of self-awareness and self-management, and the concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in order to develop your social and cultural awareness. Through a process of reflective practice, you will demonstrate the evolution of your understanding of these concepts in preparation for your successful participation and engagement in future workplace teamwork and collaboration.

This subject introduces marketing concepts and approaches within a digital environment. You will practise segmenting, targeting, and positioning to a market. You will identify how a diverse range of customers make purchase decisions to satisfy their needs and wants. You will explore the mix of decisions regarding product, price, place and promotion, and analyse a market environment in your area of study.

The Business Environment | BIZ202

This subject will introduce you to how business operates within society. You will investigate changing external environmental forces at the micro and macro levels and how businesses are impacted by and respond to these changes. You will apply business analysis tools and techniques to categorise the impact of political, economic, sociocultural, technological, legal, and environmental factors on businesses. The themes presented in this subject will help develop your business literacy.

Introduction to Sport Management | SPO101

In this subject, students will be introduced to the field of Sport Management. Students will investigate the historical foundations of sport, management principles, socio-cultural influences of sport and the role of governance in sport. Students will investigate the role sport plays in building communities and analyse the importance that professional sport plays in contemporary society.

The Food and Beverage Industry | HAT101

This subject will provide you with an introduction to the dynamic and evolving food and beverage industry. You will learn about the different sectors and types of venues that operate within the industry and explore how consumer and technological trends, external factors and evolving customer preferences impact venue operations. Once these have been identified, you will explore strategies that venues implement to develop and maintain competitive advantage.

The Business of Events | EVT102

In this subject you will be introduced to the many categories of events and their roles in society, the economy and the environment. You will design an event experience for a client in response to their business objectives. Along the way you will go behind the scenes to examine how an event is planned and executed. Topics include event concept and design, and venue selection and theming. Finally, you will focus on the factors that make an event successful.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship | ENT101

The aim of the subject is to develop an entrepreneurial mindset that incorporates creativity, innovation and research/analytical abilities. The subject focuses on entrepreneurship for start-up businesses as well as entrepreneurial behaviour within larger organisations. Students are introduced to the theory and practice of entrepreneurship, the characteristics of entrepreneurs through a range of case studies, and the “mindset” of the entrepreneur. They will gain an overview of the business startup process, make an assessment of their own “mindset” for entrepreneurship and map out their journey to develop their mindset and skillset as entrepreneurs.

As a Pathway course, admission to this course is available to students who have not met the published requirements for admission into Torrens University Undergraduate programs. Students will normally be required to complete a Readiness Assessment Test to determine the level of academic readiness for study as a guide.

Torrens University’s Readiness Assessment is a simple assessment we use to see which level of study is the best fit for you right now. If you don't have a recent Year 12 certificate or much experience with formal study, this assessment helps us understand your current skills. Rest assured: it’s not a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ test, and you do not need to study for it. We use the results to make sure you have the right amount of support to succeed in your course.

Starting with an Undergraduate Certificate is a smart way to ease into university life without feeling overwhelmed. You get to study the same subjects as you would in the Diploma program, but with much more hands-on support. Once you complete this course, you’ll have a qualification in your hand and guaranteed entry into the next step up: the Diploma or Bachelor program that corresponds with the course you studied. The subjects you complete will count towards your next step, shortening the duration of your Diploma or Bachelor’s program.
