What began in 1991 with just 40 students in Leura has grown into one of the world's leading hotel management schools, producing more than 9,100 graduates who now live and work in every corner of the globe. As Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) celebrates its 35th anniversary, it reflects on an extraordinary legacy while looking ahead to the next chapter of hospitality education and leadership.

At the heart of the milestone is a powerful story about people.

Over three-and-a-half decades, BMIHMS has welcomed students from 143 countries, with international students accounting for 80 per cent of enrolments. Together, they speak 61 languages and have built a truly global community connected by a shared passion for hospitality, service and leadership.

Today, that community spans 102 countries and 656 cities worldwide.

From Singapore to Stockholm and Sydney to Shanghai, BMIHMS graduates help shape the future of hospitality. They lead hotels, resorts, tourism businesses and global brands, while many have gone on to build successful careers across aviation, technology, banking, education, commercial real estate and entrepreneurship.

An education that leads to impactful jobs and leadership careers

The numbers tell a remarkable story.

More than 449 BMIHMS graduates now hold senior leadership positions as CEOs, Managing Directors, General Managers or founders. Another 149 have launched their own businesses, taking the entrepreneurial spirit of hospitality into new industries and markets.

Graduates can be found throughout the world's most recognised hotel brands, including Accor, Marriott and Hyatt, while alumni collectively work across more than 3,500 organisations globally.

For Professor Simon Pawson, Dean of BMIHMS, these achievements reflect the enduring value of international education.

“Hospitality is one of the world's most global industries, and our graduates are living proof of the impact that international education can have,” Professor Pawson said.

For 35 years, students have come to the Blue Mountains from around the world, learned alongside people from different cultures and experiences, and developed the skills, confidence and perspective needed to lead in a global environment.

What makes me most proud is not the scale of our alumni network, but the quality of the people within it. Our graduates are creating opportunities, building businesses, leading teams and making a positive impact wherever their careers take them.

Australian qualifications: Global impact

The influence of BMIHMS extends far beyond Australia.

Many international graduates return home to become leaders in their local industries, taking with them not only professional expertise but also lasting connections to Australia. Alumni such as Sean Ong, now Vice President of Operations at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, demonstrate how international education creates long-term relationships and influence that transcend borders.

Others have built international careers spanning multiple countries and continents. Among them is Sonya Brown, a member of the School's first graduating class and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award, whose career highlights the global opportunities that hospitality can offer.

The entrepreneurial success of graduates such as Caspar Schmidt, Founder and Managing Director of QCC Collection Group and CEO of Motif Retreats, and David Thompson, Founder and CEO of Myma.ai, further illustrates the diverse pathways created through a hospitality education.

The School's alumni network includes some of the industry's most respected leaders, among them Dimitri Karam, CEO of Signature Hotel Management Group and BMIHMS Alumni of the Year 2026, Scott Boyes, CEO of Trilogy Hotels, Tash Tobias, CEO of Salter Brothers Hospitality, Philip Lim, Senior Vice President at Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, and Kate Gerritts, Director of Operations Thailand at IHG Hotels & Resorts.

Doors that open worldwide success

Their achievements reflect a defining characteristic of BMIHMS graduates: career mobility and a focus on employability have been central to the BMIHMS story since its founding.

The School's distinctive three pillars philosophy, combining academic knowledge, practical industry experience, and personal and professional development, has helped generations of graduates build successful careers in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

As the hospitality sector continues to evolve, BMIHMS is preparing for its next chapter.

Through its BMIHMS 2.0 strategy, BMIHMS is investing in the future of hospitality education by strengthening industry partnerships, modernising learning experiences, expanding research capability and preparing graduates for a rapidly changing global workforce.

While technology, guest expectations and business models may continue to change, BMIHMS’ mission remains constant: developing exceptional hospitality professionals and future leaders.

As BMIHMS celebrates 35 years of achievement, it does so with confidence that its greatest contribution is still ahead: preparing the next generation of hospitality leaders to make their mark on the world.
