Dr Bereket Duko - Stability Thresholds in Cumulative Meta-Analysis: An Approach to Determining Evidence Robustness and Minimising Research Waste

This presentation explores the application of stability thresholds in cumulative meta-analysis to examine evidence robustness and minimise research waste. Cumulative meta-analysis offers a statistical approach to updating evidence over time, helping to identify when findings become robust and stable while also showing how study designs informed by prior systematic reviews can reduce unnecessary research. This method involves the sequential inclusion of newly published studies and the analysis of a stability threshold to determine whether the cumulative evidence has stabilised or remains sensitive to new data. I will briefly present the principles behind stability thresholds and cumulative meta-analysis, illustrated with one or two applied examples.

Rachel Ambagtsheer
Rachel is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow working in PHEHF. She has over 30 years’ experience working in the health field, working as an applied researcher, planner and consultant to all levels of government and the private and not-for-profit sectors before completing her PhD in 2020. Rachel’s research interests include the interplay between older people’s psychosocial and physical health and how older people interact with health systems, and more recently has developed a focus on ageism. She serves as a founding co-convenor of the Australian Association of Gerontology’s Challenging Ageism Special Interest Group, a Committee Member for the South Australian Division, and has been awarded Distinguished Membership of the Association. She also is an Editorial Board Member for BMC Geriatrics.

Bereket Duko
Dr Bereket Duko is a Senior Research Fellow in PHEHF and an early career researcher in public health and epidemiology. He completed his PhD in Epidemiology in 2022 and has published over 95 peer-reviewed articles. His research applies advanced epidemiological and statistical methods to investigate disease causation, with a focus on prenatal health, child development, child and adolescent mental health, and life-course outcomes. He is particularly interested in mapping intergenerational and developmental pathways that influence health and wellbeing across the lifespan. He also contributes to the academic community as Associate Editor for BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, BMC Public Health, and BMC Psychiatry, and as Academic Editor for PLOS ONE.
