Trained as an industrial designer, he moved into design management and later acquired a master's degree and PhD in design leaderships. Scott is a strong advocate for internationalisation, industry-engaged teaching, high-quality student outcomes and interdisciplinary research, and brings those passions to his role at Torrens University. Scott's own research interests intersect the disciplines of design education, higher education policy, design strategy and innovation.

Through textual research into the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, Scott’s PhD thesis conceptualises the built environment’s Internet of Things (IoT) as newly disseminating human embodiment with empowering, but also some alarming, potentialities.
