How to make the most of student life in Australia

Here’s how to make the most of our amazing country.

Soak up Sydney’s sun-drenched beaches

Sydney is spoilt with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Start at the iconic Bondi Beach and walk along the scenic Bondi to Coogee coastal trail to discover fantastic surfing spots and picture-perfect ocean pools. Take a dip in the turquoise waters of Bondi Icebergs, Bronte pool or Wylie’s Baths. Sydney’s sparkling harbour is also home to calm and picturesque coves, such as Parsley Bay, Nielsen Park and Balmoral Beach. For a weekend getaway, head three hours south of Sydney to Hyams Beach at Jervis Bay, which has earned the title of having the whitest sand in the world.

Meander through Melbourne’s laneways

The network of laneways that run through Melbourne’s city centre is home to some of the best restaurants in Australia. From high-end dining to hole-in-the-wall eateries and late-night bars, there’s plenty of gems to discover and each laneway takes on a personality of its own. On Flinders Lane, check out Chin Chin, Supernormal and Fonda Mexican or get your dumpling fix in the laneways off Chinatown. Shop the boutique stores dotted through the city’s historic arcades and be sure to check out the ever-changing street art on Hosier and Rutledge Lanes. There are endless treasures to track down and conveniently our Flinders Street campus is nestled directly across the road from Federation Square among all the action.

Discover Brisbane’s booming arts scene

Brisbane’s arts scene is world-class. The Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery host a string of prolific exhibitions throughout the year and together hold a collection of more than 16,000 works. Beyond the major galleries, boutique galleries are popping up all throughout the city, particularly in the trendy neighbourhoods of Fortitude Valley and New Farm. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre is loved by locals for its productions in dance, theatre and classical music, while the Queensland Museum showcases the city’s natural history and cultural heritage. There are numerous live music venues, with favourites including The Zoo, The Tivoli and Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall, as well as countless outdoor bars where you can enjoy Brisbane’s year-round mild weather.

Explore Adelaide’s world-famous wine regions

Known as the wine capital of Australia, Adelaide has 18 internationally-renowned wine regions on its doorstep, many of which are just a short drive from the city centre. Explore more than 80 cellar doors in the Barossa, known for its Cabernet and Shiraz, or amble through the charming villages and wineries of the Clare Valley. The Adelaide Hills is famed for its prize-winning cool climate wines and make a great day trip for a long lunch. No matter what region you choose, you’ll enjoy sumptuous food and idyllic scenery. Back in the city, Adelaide is now regarded as Australia’s most affordable capital and is consistently voted among the world’s most livable cities.
