Skylar McFarlane had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience interning at Vogue Australia

In 2022, four students had the opportunity to intern at Vogue Australia thanks to our ongoing partnership. One of them was Skylar McFarlane.

A current Bachelor of Communication Design student, when Skylar first spotted the internship opportunity at Vogue, she knew she had to apply. So understandably, Skylar was over the moon when she found out she had successfully landed the internship.

In fact, she couldn’t believe it. “I felt very honoured and grateful to be selected for this experience,” said Skylar.

Skylar knew that her Vogue Australia internship was a lifetime opportunity to work amongst one of the most highly regarded fashion magazines. She was looking forward to the valuable experience of working within a digital team, as well as furthering her skills and knowledge within the design space.

A day in the life of a Vogue Australia intern

Skylar’s day-to-day at Vogue Australia was varied. She started with a morning meeting with Vogue Australia’s digital team, which also included Vogue Living and GQ team members.

Skylar was assigned tasks by Vogue’s and GQ teams, creating article layouts, graphics and content, and sourcing imagery for current and upcoming website articles.

One of the articles Skylar sourced imagery for was ‘The red carpet should be a space of fantasy’, which required red carpet looks that explored the idea of fantasy and imagination. She also assisted with publishing articles within the fashion show section of Vogue’s website including Alexander McQueen and Balmain’s latest resort collections.

During her time at Vogue, GQ was launching a new website. Skylar worked behind the scenes redirecting content from the previous website to their new website introducing new skills within the backend of website design.

She also learned new tips and tricks creating content for Vogue Australia’s TikTok channel. The posts covered Princess Diana’s most loved outfits and upcoming Black Friday deals.

Another of Skylar’s tasks was creating written content for GQ. “I was excited to have been given the task of creating transcripts for GQ magazine's recent interviews with artists such as Flume, Winston Surfshirt and GQ 2022 actor of the year Dacre Montgomery,” said Skylar.

Learning to work under pressure at Vogue Australia and GQ

“The highlight of my experience was seeing the work I had assisted in producing, being published on Vogue Australia’s website,” said Skylar, “This was an ‘OMG’ moment.”

Within Vogue and GQ’s face-paced work environment, Skylar was able to learn how to apply herself under pressure and advance her skill set, and industry knowledge.

“I believe these learnings and skills will be essential for future career roles within the creative industry,” said Skylar.

Skylar said the internship was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one she is extremely grateful for.

“This internship was extremely important to me as it provided invaluable industry experience within such a renowned company.”

After working at Steele. Label. as a Social Media & PR Coordinator, Skylar now freelances for Finch Design Studio.
