The scholarship recognises emerging creative talent and supports students who demonstrate a distinctive voice, strong design thinking and the potential to shape the future of the industry.

For the Trimester 1 2026 winner, Amelia Coletta, design has always been instinctive. From an early age, she was drawn to textures, forms and visual storytelling. Rearranging her room, sketching outfits and experimenting with fabrics were everyday expressions of curiosity and creativity. Those early explorations gradually evolved into a clear career path.

During Years 11 and 12, design became her favourite subject. She found herself constantly analysing the details others might overlook: how colours interact, how shapes influence mood and how materials create atmosphere. Design was deeply embedded in how she experienced the world.

Receiving the Vogue Australia Design scholarship affirmed that instinct. It recognised not only her technical ability but her creative perspective and willingness to question conventional ideas of beauty and perfection.

Choosing to study Design at Billy Blue

When deciding where to study, Amelia was drawn to the opportunity to build a career that merges creativity with real-world impact. Design offered exactly that.

“I’ve always been a very hands-on girl,” she explains. “I’ve loved textures, shapes and aesthetics for as long as I can remember. Even when I was younger, I was constantly experimenting, rearranging my room, sketching outfits, playing with fabrics or putting together mood boards just because I could.” Over time, that natural curiosity developed into a deeper motivation. She realised design was not simply something she enjoyed doing. It was something she wanted to pursue professionally.

“I notice details: how things feel, how colours sit together, how shapes create energy in a space,” she says. “It’s never been something I decided to try. It’s just how my brain works.”

Amelia first discovered the Vogue Australia Scholarship through a Future Student Advisor while enrolling in the Diploma of Design at Billy Blue College of Design.

“I first learned about the scholarship from the Future Student Advisor when I enrolled in the degree. Hearing the details, it sounded incredible but also kind of beyond me.”

At first, the opportunity felt slightly out of reach. Yet the possibility of applying encouraged her to reflect on her creative ideas and confidence.

“The application process ended up being really empowering. It pushed me to share my own opinions and feelings, especially around the idea of perfection.” This reflection became a turning point in how she approached her creative work.

For her application submission, Amelia wanted to create something that authentically represented her creative voice. Rather than trying to predict what judges might want to see, she focused on producing work that genuinely reflected her design philosophy.

The final piece was a mocked-up Vogue cover exploring the concept of being “perfectly imperfect”.

“For my submission, I chose a piece that really represents my style and how I think creatively,” she explains. “I didn’t want to submit something that I thought they would want to see. I wanted to submit something that felt authentic to me.”

The concept examined how imperfections can reveal deeper forms of beauty. Through layered textures and tactile visual elements, the design challenged traditional expectations of flawlessness. “The piece focused on how the beauty within imperfection enables us to own all of our differences.”

Texture, layering and dimensionality were central to the visual execution. These elements allowed Amelia to demonstrate not only technical skill but also conceptual thinking.

“I love designing in a way that feels tactile and dimensional, so I wanted my work to reflect that.”

More importantly, the piece expressed how visual communication can shape perception. “It felt important to show my creative voice and how what people think influences how people feel, rather than just technical skill.”

This approach reflects a broader understanding of design as a cultural and emotional language, a perspective highly valued within the Vogue Scholarship selection process.

The Vogue Australia scholarship experience

When Amelia received the news that she had won the scholarship, the reaction was immediate and deeply emotional.

“Honestly, I was shocked. I didn’t expect to win at all. It felt surreal and then suddenly very real at the same time.”

For Amelia, the award represented more than financial support. It validated her decision to pursue design and reinforced her confidence in her creative instincts.

“I felt proud, not just because of the scholarship itself, but because I had backed myself enough to apply.

“When I told Mum, she cried. And yes, there were definitely happy tears from me too.”

Looking ahead, Amelia is excited about the opportunities that studying at Billy Blue will bring. She is particularly eager to collaborate with other creatives and develop her ideas within a professional learning environment. “I’m looking forward to being surrounded by creative people who also see the world differently.”

She also hopes to expand her technical abilities and translate conceptual ideas into practical outcomes. “I’m especially excited about refining my technical skills and understanding how to take a creative idea and develop it into something ready for the real world.”

Ultimately, her goal is to find a killer career within the design industry. “I don’t just want a job. I want to build something meaningful that makes an impact and creates a legacy,” she says.

Tips for 2026 Vogue scholarship applicants

For those considering the Vogue Australia Scholarship, Amelia offers clear and honest advice:

“Apply. Even if you feel unsure. Even if you think you’re not ready.”

Self-doubt is common among emerging creatives, but it should never stop you from pursuing opportunities. “Even if you feel others around you are more creative, passionate or talented, back yourself.”

Authenticity, she believes, is the most powerful asset a designer can bring to their work. “Be your true self and show your authentic work, not what you think people want to see.”

Her final piece of advice is simple but powerful:

“Don’t underestimate yourself. Sometimes the only thing standing between you and an opportunity is whether you believe you deserve to take it.”
