Torrens University recognises his outstanding leadership and contributions to the growth and success of the university, to our students, academic community and industry.

A vision for better access for students

Throughout his career, Professor Louw has been known for championing openness and access to education for all. As he has said:

“The importance of higher education for the growth and development of society is generally accepted. But openness and access to education for all is essential to maximise its benefits. Leaders in higher education must be ready to examine what it will take to achieve this.

Openness is therefore not only a matter of access to higher education. It is an inclusive process of opening entrance opportunities, followed by a purpose-driven support environment that aims to prepare successful graduates to contribute to society.”

This philosophy has guided his work at Torrens University and beyond. He has consistently argued that higher education should provide access for as many people as possible to reach their full potential, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and addressing inequality as a key threat to societal development.

Professor Louw’s belief in the democratisation of societies, information, and knowledge reflects his conviction that education is central to freedom and meaningful living. His vision of openness - flexible, fair, welcoming, and unprejudiced access to higher education has shaped Torrens University’s purpose and culture.

A distinguished career in tertiary education

Appointed Vice-Chancellor of Torrens University in January 2020, Professor Louw brought with him more than 20 years of senior academic leadership experience, including roles at Monash South Africa, Vaal University of Technology, and the University of South Africa. A sociologist by training, he has published extensively on societal development, gender equity, civil society, and the future of education.
