The formal investiture of Mr Michael Thawley AO as Chancellor of Torrens University Australia took place on Monday, 10 November at the Adelaide Convention Centre during the graduation ceremony.
The ceremony marked a significant moment in Torrens’ evolution, as it enters its second decade of growth and innovation.
Governing Board member, Greg Crafter AO, formally inducted Mr Thawley in the time-honoured tradition. He was joined on stage by Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Alwyn Louw, members of the university’s executive and academic leadership.
Mr Crafter acknowledged the legacy of former Chancellor, Jim Varghese and paid tribute to Mr Thawley’s distinguished career in diplomacy, government, and global finance.
“Michael Thawley brings a remarkable record of leadership, integrity, and commitment in both the public and private sectors. His deep dedication to education makes him an ideal choice to guide Torrens University Australia in its growth and innovation, aligning perfectly with the mission and aspirations of our university,” said Mr Crafter.
A career defined by global leadership
Mr Thawley’s career spans decades of public service and international engagement. He served as Australia’s Ambassador to the United States (2000 – 2005), Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (2014 – 2016), and International Adviser to Prime Minister John Howard. His diplomatic postings included Rome, Moscow, and Tokyo, and he later held senior roles in global finance, including as Senior Vice President of Capital Group.
He has also served on the boards of the Lowy Institute and the US Studies Centre and is well-acquainted with Torrens University through his role as an independent non-Executive Director of Strategic Education Inc. - Torrens University’s parent company and as a member of the university’s Governing Board since 2023.
“I am honoured to be appointed Chancellor of Torrens University Australia,” said Mr Thawley.
