Ms Natasha Stott Despoja AO has been appointed to Torrens University Australia’s Governing Board, bringing extensive experience in public policy, international leadership and higher education governance.

Ms Stott Despoja served as a Senator for South Australia and Leader of the Australian Democrats before continuing a distinguished career in national and international leadership roles focused on equality, education and opportunity.

After leaving the Parliament Ms Stott Despoja continued to make a significant contribution to public life through a wide range of roles. Her work has included serving as Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls and contributing to global initiatives addressing discrimination and gender equality. Ms Stott Despoja has served on several high performing boards, including the Burnet Institute, the South Australian Museum, the Museum of Australian Democracy, Carrie’s Beanies for Brain Cancer, the Australian Ballet, the Global Women’s Institute Leadership Council and the Advertising Standards Board.

She was also Deputy Chair of the Board at Beyond Blue, and the founding Chair of Our Watch, an organisation that works to eliminate violence against women and children.

Ms Stott Despoja has also contributed to higher education governance through her service on the Council of the Australian National University from 2016-2021.

Torrens University Chancellor, Michael Thawley AO, said Ms Stott Despoja’s appointment strengthens the university’s commitment to opportunity and student success.

“Natasha Stott Despoja has spent her career championing opportunity through education, leadership and public service,” Mr Thawley said.

“Her experience across government, international institutions and university governance will be an enormous asset as Torrens University continues expanding access to high-quality, industry-connected education for students across Australia.”

Ms Stott Despoja said she was pleased to join the university’s Governing Board. “Education transforms lives and expands opportunity,” she said.
