Vogue Scholarships for design students at Billy Blue College

Ever wonder what it's like to be mentored by Vogue Australia? Now is your chance.

For aspiring designers, it doesn’t get much bigger than Vogue Australia

Last year, we launched our exclusive Vogue Australia Scholarship as part of our longstanding partnership. Each recipient received a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees, plus the opportunity to tap into the minds of Vogue’s industry leaders thanks to the included mentorship program.

Applicants were tasked with designing their own Vogue covers – and the results were exceptional. In the end, we awarded four scholarships to deserving winners

It’s so exciting to uncover emerging talent – which is exactly why the Vogue Australia Scholarship is back. We have two scholarships to award to creatives of all kinds, and applications are open now.

Here’s what recent recipient Sunday Salt had to say about scoring this unique opportunity.

How did you hear about the Vogue Australia Scholarship and how did you find the application process?

I found the scholarship on the Billy Blue website three days before applications closed, so I knew I had to work quickly. I spent those three days writing my answers and creating my Vogue cover, which was stressful but definitely worth it in the end.

What creative piece did you submit for your application and why?

I chose to submit a fashion photography piece that resembled a Vogue magazine cover. It included the Vogue title made up of painted brushstrokes, superimposed flowers and headings of articles that covered fashion-related topics that I found interesting. Using these elements helped me to convey my creative aesthetic, but also show a deeper interest to start at Billy Blue.

How did you feel when you found out you won?

I was genuinely very surprised when I found out I had won, because of how late I had applied. I was really happy and, after the initial shock wore off, I became really excited to start at Billy Blue.

How have you found your study experience at Billy Blue so far?

I have really enjoyed my time at Billy Blue so far. All my classes have been quite small, and my lecturers have been really kind – which has been helpful in transferring from high school to uni. It has also been really interesting meeting people from different courses in Design as we share a lot of classes.

What has it been like being the Vogue Australia Scholarship winner?

Everyone has been lovely. The first session there was an introduction, while in the second session I got to speak individually with different people in the fashion and art departments about their roles and careers. Talking to people with real-world experience has been a great opportunity to learn about the industry, and to gain global perspectives and advice I otherwise may not have been able to access.

What advice do you have for people thinking about applying for the scholarship and studying at Billy Blue?

Give it your best and just go for it, because there is no harm in trying. I would also say submitting a creative piece that shows what you are passionate about is important, because it will be reflected in your final work.
