You need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience. At Billy Blue College of Design, strong industry partnerships help students break that cycle.
For Fashion Marketing & Enterprise student Kristin Louise Overall, one Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placement became something much bigger: her first full-time role in fashion.
Last year, Kristin secured an internship with Australian womenswear brand Antipodean through her WIL subject. Soon, she was gaining hands-on industry experience across content, creative projects and photoshoots. Her talent, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved made an impression. Antipodean subsequently offered Kristin a paid position as Marketing and Social Media Assistant.
The internship is the reason I’m at Antipodean today. I took a chance, and they took a chance on me too. I’m so grateful that my first experience in the industry has turned into a full-time role.

Where study meets industry
WIL is designed to take learning beyond the classroom and into professional environments, giving students the opportunity to apply their skills, build networks and understand how their chosen industry operates.
For Kristin, the opportunity came at exactly the right time.
When the WIL subject came up, I was excited to get some hands-on industry experience. I applied to Antipodean and started my internship within a matter of weeks.
Rather than limiting herself to a defined list of responsibilities, Kristin approached the placement with curiosity. She supported content and creative tasks, worked on shoots and actively volunteered for new opportunities.
The team shared so much with me and gave me room to be creative. I also made a point of offering to help on upcoming shoots because those experiences are so valuable.
That willingness to contribute helped Kristin turn an internship into employment. But her story also reflects something bigger: what can happen when education and industry work closely together.

Partnerships with real impact
Industry partnerships at Billy Blue College of Design are about more than adding professional experience to a course. At their best, they create meaningful connections between emerging creatives and the people already shaping their industries.
Antipodean is a strong example. Over the past 12 months, Jessy and the Antipodean team have consistently supported Billy Blue students by offering two internship opportunities each trimester across Fashion Marketing and Fashion Design.
That ongoing commitment gives students access to real workplaces, real projects and real expectations. It also gives them the chance to show an employer what they can do.

These opportunities provide invaluable real-world experience and a meaningful pathway into the industry. Kristin’s journey is a wonderful example of how internships can open doors to employment says Billy Blue’s industry consultant.
Saskia Fairfull
This kind of partnership matters because creative careers are built through more than technical knowledge alone. Students need opportunities to test their thinking, respond to feedback, collaborate with professionals and understand the pace and expectations of industry.
They also need the opportunity to be seen.
From first industry role to full-time career
Kristin’s internship with Antipodean was both her first role in fashion and her first full-time professional experience.
I was quite anxious at first, but I learned to trust the process. The girls believed in me enough to bring me on full time, and feeling that support helped me grow in confidence.
Today, her role spans marketing and content strategy, social media creation and scheduling, image and video editing, promotions, influencer activity and PR. It is varied, fast-moving and closely connected to the skills and experience she set out to develop when she began studying Fashion Marketing and Enterprise.
Kristin believes her determination to make the most of the experience helped turn the placement into a permanent opportunity.
I give my all to the work I do and make sure I’m proud of what I contribute.
The experience has also taught her one of the most important lessons for any emerging creative professional: back yourself, while staying open to feedback and growth.
Build experience before you graduate
At Billy Blue College of Design, industry connection is part of preparing students for creative careers. Through opportunities like WIL, students can take what they have learned and put it to work, while building the professional confidence, relationships and experience that can help shape what comes next.
For Kristin, that connection changed the trajectory of her career before she had even finished studying.
Billy Blue gave me the opportunity to complete a WIL placement, which helped me secure my internship. I also felt supported while balancing my studies with getting started in the industry.
Her advice to other students is simple: take a chance.
Go for it. Any experience is valuable. Ask questions, offer to help and take opportunities when they come up, even if they’re outside your usual tasks. Those extra experiences can teach you so much.
Because sometimes an internship is more than an internship. With the right industry partner, it can be the first step into the career you came to Billy Blue to create.
