The Australian Design Review 30UNDER30 initiative is a prestigious program that celebrates young professionals shaping the future of architecture and design. Something at Billy Blue we like to refer to as a Professional Troublemaker.
Selected by a panel of industry heavyweights, the final 30 are recognised for their creativity, innovation and impact. They earn a 12-month mentorship opportunity with acclaimed designers plus a three-day retreat in Bali to take part in creative workshops and networking events.
Mariah’s inclusion in this cohort places her among the most promising young talents in Australia’s interior and product design industries – and we at Billy Blue College of Design are so proud of her.
Establishing Folk Studio
Mariah co-founded Folk Studio shortly after graduating with a Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration and a Bachelor of Interior Design (Commercial) from Billy Blue College of Design. Since its inception, Folk Studio has gained a reputation for thoughtfully curated interiors that reflect a deep understanding of space, materials and human experience.
With a design approach that prioritises warmth and functionality, the studio has worked on a diverse range of projects, from hospitality and residential interiors to bespoke commercial spaces.
Mariah’s ability to translate client briefs into timeless, elegant designs is a true strength. Through Folk Studio, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to craftsmanship and storytelling in design, creating spaces that not only serve their purpose but also evoke a sense of place and belonging.
Giving back to Billy Blue and preparing students for the industry
Beyond her work at Folk Studio, Mariah has been actively engaged with Billy Blue, the Design faculty of Torrens University, bridging the gap between education and industry. In a coup for our students, Mariah teaches our Professional Practice class, helping students prepare themselves for industry. Her involvement strengthens the connection between emerging designers and the industry, reinforcing the importance of practical experience alongside theoretical learning.
Interior Design and Decoration Course Coordinator, Melissa O'Brien describes Mariah as "one of the most kind and knowledgeable lecturers that we have on our team at Billy Blue. She brings her vast industry experience to the classroom for students to benefit from directly. She is generous in sharing her expertise and insights, and our students directly benefit from that, particularly as they move from her class right out into working in the interior design industry.”
Billy Blue pride
Mariah’s selection as one of the final 30 in ADR’s 30UNDER30 program acknowledges her exceptional talent and dedication, and she’s thrilled about the nod: “It’s such an honour to be recognised.”
Her recognition also highlights the growing presence of young female leaders and people of colour in the Australian design industry. She has shown that success comes from a combination of creative vision, perseverance and an ability to adapt to an evolving industry.
As Program Director for Interior Design and Architectural Technology, I've had the privilege of seeing Mariah’s growth as a designer. Her passion for interior design is evident not only in her professional work but also in her commitment to mentoring the next generation.
It is incredibly rewarding to see Mariah’s efforts recognised through ADR’s 30UNDER30 program. She is a shining example of the talent, drive and innovation that comes through in our Billy Blue alumni.
Her recognition is an honour not only for her but also for Billy Blue College of Design. As she continues to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation, there is no doubt that Mariah will remain an influential figure in Australian design for years to come.
