From studying Hospitality in Australia to teaching students

Jay Milano

Jay Milano was an international student from the Philippines at Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School and reflects on his journey coming back as a learning facilitator.

Over the course of three decades, Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) has launched thousands of successful careers and Jay Milano is no exception. “I received a world-class education and gained a global perspective on the hospitality industry which created a foundation for my career growth into leadership roles”. Studying at BMIHMS gave Jay a strong foundation in hotel operations and management which allowed him to directly apply these skills to his various roles across the hotel industry.

I wanted an education that not only provided theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that would set me apart in the competitive hotel industry. That is why I chose to study at BMIHMS, due to its exceptional reputation in hospitality management.

“The Master of International Hotel Management provided not only strong academic foundations but nurtured my critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills which I was able to apply directly to my roles in the hotel industry.” Not only did Jay gain practical knowledge but the diverse mix of students exposed him to new cultures. “The international exposure and friendships forged from different cultures was an invaluable experience that has enriched my life.”

Creating industry connections and giving back to the student community

Having worked in the industry for a few years, Jay was driven to give back and contribute to the education of future leaders in the hospitality industry. “The teaching methods and mentorship I received from my educators inspired me to approach teaching.” Although Jay came from a non-teaching background, the hands-on experience from his work and from his time at BMIHMS made him a great candidate to teach emerging hospitality course students.

“The guidance, mentorship and dedication from my previous learning facilitators deeply influenced my teaching philosophy and commitment to delivering student success.”

“I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment that empowers students to thrive.”

As a former international student, Jay had to wait eight years until he could move to Australia in 2018 to embark on his study journey. “If I can do it, you can do it too. Go forward with an open heart and passion for learning and one day your sacrifices and challenges will be rewarded.”

When asked to reflect on the last five years Jay says, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Continuing the school’s legacy of excellence is such an honour and witnessing student’s growth and success in the industry is truly rewarding.”
