Media Release | 29 April 2025
Torrens University has been committed to advancing education, research, and practice in natural therapies for the benefit of individuals and the health sector since 1961 with the establishment of the Southern School of Natural Therapies, now part of Torrens University. Today we offer Health Science degrees in Complementary Medicine including; Clinical Nutrition and Chinese Medicine which have retained private health insurance benefits.
The Natural Therapies Review, led by Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael Kidd AO, confirmed the effectiveness of these therapies, leading the Albanese Government to accept the recommendations to reinstate Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine, both degree qualified professions in Australia.
Insurers will now work with the natural therapies sector to determine coverage options and re-establish provider credentialing, strengthening the accessibility of these treatments.
Access to complementary medicine through private health insurance
Torrens University has long championed holistic health and evidence-based wellness practices and provided evidence on research and education standards to the Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel.
“This welcome decision supports a holistic approach to healthcare, ensuring Australians have access to evidence-informed complementary medicine that provides them with more choice in treatments that contribute to physical and mental well-being.
“By supporting proven natural therapies, Australians will now have greater access to complementary medicine through private health insurance, reinforcing the value of integrative and preventative health,” said Professor Matthew Mundy, Executive Dean, Health & Education.
Catherine Smith, Program Director said this decision provided confidence to students studying to become naturopaths and herbalists.
The review outcome aligns with findings of the first Health Technology Assessment (HTA) for the naturopathic profession (2022). Compiled by the international naturopathic community, of which Torrens University is an educational member, the HTA provides an evidence-based summary of naturopathic practice, safety, economics and efficacy.
“This decision marks an important milestone for both practitioners and patients. When a practitioner has a provider number from a private health insurer, clients know that practitioner has met the highest standards of education and practice,” said Catherine.
The reinstatement of health fund rebates for naturopathy and western herbal medicine consultations restores professional credibility and increases equity of access to preventative and complementary healthcare.
