Each subject involves 10 hours of study per week, comprising 3 hours of facilitated study and 7 hours self-directed study.

International students must not enrol in more than one-third (33%) of online subjects over their course and must study at least one face-to-face subject each study period. Most face-to-face courses are also available online. Please note that due to COVID-19 pandemic, authorities have provided exceptions to the usual face-to-face learning requirements.

International students on a student visa are required to study full time, i.e. the student must complete a minimum of 1.0 EFTSL of study per year.

  • Business Environment | MGT501 

    This subject introduces the student to the foundations of business. The focus of this subject is on providing fundamental concepts and context for students to enrich their mastery in subsequent studies while developing as a reflective practitioner. Students will examine the functional operations of business and the environments in which it operates. This may include analysing the economic, social, political, legal, technological and ethical influences on contemporary businesses. Students will also examine the viewpoints of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Business Communications | MGT502
    This subject introduces students to the concepts of business communications and transferrable academic skills.  This subject presents an analysis of the types of communication processes, which occur in the internal and external business environment, including an examination of the theoretical underpinnings of communication in business.  Emphasis is placed on writing skills, reports and presentations and on using technology to communicate.  The subject introduces students to research skills, information literacy, critical analysis, writing and language techniques.  The aims of this subject are to provide knowledge and skills needed for success in Higher Education, to help students manage their own success and to assist them in reaching their academic potential.  
  • Management, People and Teams | MGT600
    Understanding organisational behaviour, politics, dynamics and environments and how they impact on the role and legitimacy of the management function is the core of this subject.  This subject helps individuals understand the constraints they face as managers and emerging leaders and how they can develop strategies to leverage advantages and overcome constraints and barriers in their organisations.  The subject also focusses on developing some of the advanced communication skills necessary in management and leadership roles, and the ability of the individual to influence others.  The subject introduces students to the concept of naturally occurring data and qualitative analysis.  This subject also focuses on the development of knowledge and skills to enable students to identify, analyse and make effective decisions to resolve people-related issues in organisations, facilitate employee development, and develop and sustain effective teams in complex, diverse, and increasingly global operating environments.
  • Financial Management | FIN600
    This subject is focused on how to use accounting and financial information for decision-making purposes. It is designed for the leader/manager who will be using, rather than producing accounting and financial information. This subject also addresses the various types of financial decisions that leaders must make, and the strategies necessary to anticipate the alternatives, evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each and recognise the tradeoffs inherent in each alternative. The objective of this subject is for students to learn how to apply accounting and finance theory and principles to the analysis of important business problems, further developing their skills at using numerical analysis and research to support a line of argument.
  • Strategic Marketing | MKTG6003_SM

    In this module you will be introduced to the concept of marketing, understood as a fundamental aspect of any company strategy. We will also discuss Strategic and Operational Marketing within the field of sports. Throughout the module we will review various theoretical concepts and find practical applications within the sports industry. This material will also include a wealth of real examples which will allow you to understand and enjoy sports marketing.

    The Marketing module provides students with a basic understanding of the relationship and impact of marketing on the company's overall strategy. We will review concepts such as segmentation and positioning, both essential to defining the company's business.

    Special emphasis will be placed on market research as a process necessary for decision making on an ongoing basis: from the time of defining the business model upon completion of market and competitor analysis, through the time of developing concrete marketing strategies upon subsequent analysis of results and the development and adaptation of new tactics. The classic operational marketing tools will also be reviewed and adapted to the sports industry, placing special emphasis during the specialization on the sections on communication, branding, new media and sports sponsorship.

  • Dynamic Leadership | MGT601

    Leadership in modern organisations is a way of thinking and behaving.  It is not necessarily a position in a hierarchy.  Leadership is a process of energising, influencing and motivating others: up, down, sideways and diagonally.  Becoming an effective leader requires self-awareness, self-management and a strong set of interpersonal communication skills, a set of capabilities that are often described as Emotional Intelligence (EQ).  In addition, effective leaders think and act strategically, they build a climate for creativity and innovation, and are culturally sensitive and comfortable with ambiguity. 

    This subject focuses on developing your leadership capability and not leadership as a theoretical concept that applies to other people.  It helps you explore your own leadership development and self-image, using the techniques of reflective research and supported by a mentoring partner.  It guides you through the preparation of plan for your continued leadership and professional development that is consistent with your personal values, anchored by the academic literature and enables you to be authentic, confident and resilient in leading productive work places for the future.

    Dynamic Leadership provides learning at the cognitive or intellectual level and at the affective or emotional level.  It develops explicit knowledge of leadership (know-what) and the often-neglected tacit knowledge (know-how).
  • Sports Marketing | SPM610

    In an ever globalised world, where the greatest sport events are now followed by millions of people around the world, managing and distributing broadcasting rights is a highly professional business where sport agencies are becoming increasingly required for the added value they are able to generate to the product conceived by federations and event organisers, optimising audience, exposure and revenue, using segmenting distribution and brand positioning in collaboration with television broadcasters, marketing agencies, federations and event organisers.

    Every day companies are more aware of the importance of communication in business strategy to meet the world’s demands. Pitching the right message at the right time is paramount in branding and therefore in the company’s value. Regarding the internal performance or employee performance, the adequate flow of information proves the functioning and creates a greater emotional bond between the staff and the company. Sports companies, or companies related to the sports industry, must be particularly aware of communication, understanding it as part of their strategy plan and using the values in sports as the base of their projects.

    Finally, the communication department, as well as all the other departments, should have a contingency plan prepared to respond effectively in the event of a crisis situation. Avoiding improvisations that may negatively affect the brand’s value built over time. It is difficult to create a brand image, but it can literally take only a few minutes to destroy it.

  • Business Decision Analytics | MGT602
    Today's decisions have to be made quickly, individually and in groups, with what often appears to be ambiguous or too much data. How does one select, observe and distil the most pertinent data sets to make decisions that will positively impact tomorrow's firms and communities? This subject engages students in the nuances of data collection, how to filter data and how to use it most effectively in decision-making. The subject develops the student's qualitative and quantitative research skills, and digital literacy.

    The subject on Specialization in sports for development and entrepreneurship is one of the core parts of the MBA in Sports Management and it seeks to bring a new vision on the ways that we can undertake our projects, with a clear entrepreneurial focus and always following our criteria on social responsibility and sustainability.
  • Strategic Management | MGT604
    This subject explores sustainable approaches to managing the symbiotic relationship between organisations and their environments. Organisations are increasingly facing disruption and the basis for delivering products and services is rapidly changing. Sustaining performance requires careful management of business processes, fostering corporate competencies, and aligning the firm to its internal and external environment. The student will learn and then practice strategising through a number of theories and practical settings.
  • Management and Operation of a Sports Venue | MGMT6020_SM
    The Operations Learning Unit is important as it is one of the subjects that is currently being most development. The subject of Operations concerns everything from how to organize a championship team in an area that is not trained for it to how to sell events at a stadium. Operations students will be able to develop qualities such as teamwork, initiative, communication skills and awareness of ethical issues. Communication skills will be a part of the course when doing the necessary work, and teamwork will help students get to know each other better and to create a good network of professional contacts. The awareness of ethical values is relevant to this module, as it is very important to approach environmental issues and regulations during any construction with an ethical conscience, as this consciousness is necessary today in any development.
  • Residence: Sport Facility Operations | RSO609
    This subject is an immersive and experiential study of sporting facilities. In this subject, you will be required to explore and reflect on the impact of sport facilities and their program of events on the city, and provide a critical analysis to stakeholders as a guide for future stadium development and event programming. This is to maximise the economic, cultural, tourism and social impact to the city. This subject is co-delivered by practicing industry professionals who will share their contemporary knowledge of facility design, marketing and management. Building on previous studies, students will be expected to think broadly about the impact of the facilities from a range of business and community perspectives.
  • Field Project | FPR611

    This subject enables students to demonstrate their ability to think strategically and apply the concepts and tools learned in the course to a sports organisation of their choice. Students will apply investigative and specialised sports knowledge to the professional context of a sporting agency. The subject requires application of concepts, theories and knowledge to the development of management practice in the context of the sports industry.

    Students will work under the auspices of an academic supervisor as they prepare a project that has real-world consequences, one that will make an impact on the field of sports management in their chosen community, or sphere of influence. The project is to be practical- or research based and to make a contribution to theory or practice.

  • Systems Thinking | MGT603
    This subject builds on systems theory and introduces students to a holistic view of the organisation and the broader ecosystem it operates in. It also introduces students to the basic principles of operations management in the context of Systems Thinking. Students will be exposed to Systems Thinking tools to diagnose and propose innovative solutions to contemporary business issues.
  • Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship | MGT607
    This subject seeks to build the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to succeed as an ethical entrepreneur or entrepreneur. These knowledge and skills are then applied to identify and evaluate innovative high-growth product and service opportunities in the context of a start-up, a corporation, a not for profit or a government institution. The subject allows students to practice skills, including creativity, cash-flow modelling, business model analysis and lean experimentation. Students prepare a business plan for a new venture, or an improvement to an existing enterprise, enabling them to integrate their theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Principles of Project Management | PROJ6000
    This course provides students with a grounding in the principles of project management, its methods and contemporary standards associated with managing diverse projects. Students in this course are introduced to the knowledge, tools, and techniques needed to manage projects (including IT projects) successfully throughout a project life cycle, and to the language used by practitioners in conjunction with the terminology recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students explore the project management knowledge areas and process groups of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) guide. Students also examine the ways these two dimensions of project management interact in initiating (scoping), planning, executing (launching), monitoring and controlling, and closing a project. The subject provides students with opportunities to also examine the challenges of project management and the professional traits that project managers are associated with.
  • Integrated Project Management | PROJ6001
    In this subject, students learn the integrative nature of project management and develop skills to coordinate the various project management processes and activities. Students formulate appropriate project life cycle and apply the PMBOK (PMI, 2017) project management process groups to their selected case study. They update the project management plan and other artefacts impacted by the change management process. Students evaluate enterprise environmental factors influencing project outcomes and develop effective management strategies. They apply a range of tools to realise and cultivate benefits for the project and organisation, and establish communication strategies to engage relevant stakeholders.
  • Project Execution and Control | PROJ6003
    In this subject, students will examine how to monitor and control project execution (including IT projects), by implementing a project plan and managing progress by applying performance reporting, analysis, and measurement techniques to ensure that activities are executed as planned. This will include responding to risk events and issues; managing scope changes; communicating with team members and stakeholders; acceptance of deliverables, and administrative and financial closure.
  • Contracts and Procurement | PROJ6004
    Procurement and contracts are integral to successful project management. In this course, students learn about planning for purchases and acquisitions, requests for proposal, vendor selection, contract administration, and contract closure. Students learn how to approach key issues with regard to short and long‐term contracts, and small and large contracts. Topics covered include the examination of procurement strategies, responsiveness, and supplier‐client relationships. Students will also examine tendering, bidding and order management processes, relevant legal and commercial implications, as well as managing the relationship between buyer and seller, assessing vendor performance, contract change control, and conflict resolution.
  • Sustainability in Project Portfolio and Program Management | PROJ6005
    This subject introduces program participants to the nature and importance of concepts that go beyond the twin imperatives of time and (financial) cost. Specific topics include sustainability in terms of social equity, economic efficiency, and environmental performance; project management life cycles; resource management; and change management. Students learn how to assess and evaluate the performance of multiple projects, and how to apply a range of tools and techniques when managing project portfolios, along with the nature of sustainability in project management in terms of how project management processes align with the three fundamentals of sustainable development: social equity, economic efficiency, and environmental performance.
  • Organisational Behaviour and People Management | PROJ6006
    One role of the project manager is to lead teams in complex and diverse organisational settings while concurrently communicating with all stakeholders. In this course, students examine how to support and motivate team members to perform to the best of their ability, producing quality results within the required time and cost limits, and how individual and group behaviour impacts organisational effectiveness. Students learn ways to design projects to support organisational goals and how to build and engage organisational capital (intellectual, human, physical, financial, and structural). They also assess communications management as a tool to manage internal and external relationships with stakeholders, partners, vendors, and customers.
  • Foundations of Information Systems | MIS500
    This subject introduces students to the key concepts and technologies of information systems that drive change and support organisations to achieve strategic goals. This includes data and information management, application of business information systems, disruptive technologies and issues such as ethics, privacy and cyber security. This subject will prepare students to better understand the technologies that are disrupting and transforming society both now and into the future.
  • Data Modelling and Database Design | MIS602
    Students will learn the importance of data to an organisation and the problems inherent in creating, storing, and managing that data. This subject will explore relational database design and modelling and students will learn how to handle data anomalies and the process of data integration. During this unit you will explore an organisation’s need for a data warehouse, learn about data visualisation and evaluate dashboard designs to view data. Students will examine the need for distributed data in today’s business environment.
  • Microservices Architecture | MIS603
    This subject introduces students to microservices architecture within the context of cloud computing models. The emergence of these techniques of building applications is directly related to innovations in the areas of cloud computing and platforms. In this subject, the focus will be on the evolution from more traditional approaches to microservices architecture. Core concepts related to the principles and practices of microservices will be reviewed.
  • Requirements Engineering | MIS604
    Requirements management is a method of defining, using, modelling, documenting, maintaining, and measuring requirements throughout the software process. This helps developers explore requirements management and how it supports systems engineering and software engineering life cycles. Develop techniques for eliciting requirements and identifying good requirements. Represent requirements graphically by utilising powerful unified modelling language (UML) diagramming techniques. Develop skills to effectively manage requirements changes and techniques for measuring requirement quality through quantitative metrics.
  • Systems Analysis and Design | MIS605
    This subject introduces students to activities, techniques, and methodologies a systems analyst uses to design information systems that, when built, enhance the organisation’s ability to meet its business goals via available technology. These include define requirements for system, model high-level behaviours of system, and design blueprint, that is, planning and implementation and will move through object-oriented approaches to analysis and design, the transformation of user requirements to system design. User empathy is promoted in this subject, using the unified modelling language (UML).
  • Cybersecurity | MIS607
    Information is a vital organisational asset. Information systems store, process and exchange information, and most economic sectors are dependent on electronic and automated systems. Interconnectivity is important for many organisations, but this also increases the exposure to adverse events, necessitating the need for thorough information security management. This subject builds upon fundamental information security concepts, including the management of information systems that affect organisational information security: identity management, authentication, access control, monitoring, risk management, incident response and disaster recovery. Since cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility, having the basic knowledge to prevent attacks, mitigate risk, and get up to speed with best practice cyber governance is an essential ingredient to succeed in today’s digital world.
  • Agile Project Management | MIS608
    Progressing from traditional project management frameworks this subject focuses on Agile project management, agile project management methodology, the principles of agile, and agile techniques. This subject will be based on a foundation of the 4 core values and 12 guiding principles of agile as laid out by the agile manifesto. Students will develop an understanding of agile concepts, tools and techniques: Scrum and Kanban, Roadmap planning, Program increments, Sprints and daily scrums and the agile roles within teams. Some of the leading agile frameworks will be discussed so that students have an understanding of some of the different philosophies, which support the agile continuous delivery pipeline. Points of origin in Lean practice and the relationship between agile and DevOps will also be covered to help students orient themselves in the broader emerging landscape of projects and software development landscape.
  • Accounting Information Systems | ACCT6001
    This subject covers the nature, role and benefits of information systems in business and how it can assist in management decision-making. Focus is given in the Accounting Information Systems. The business processes, internal controls, and auditing of accounting information systems, ethics and cybercrime are also explored.
  • Statistics for Financial Decisions | STAT6003

    This subject covers the role of statistical analysis in decision making for accounting and finance professionals. It is divided into descriptive and inferential statistics. Students will learn about statistical techniques for the quantitative evaluation of data in decision making for accounting, finance and business applications. Students will develop analytical and statistical skills through Excel data analysis to manipulate data into meaningful information for the purpose of decision making. Students will also learn to interpret statistical results and communicate their statistical analysis in business reports.

    Topics covered include: Qualitative techniques for data collection and investigation, Descriptive statistics including graphical and numerical presentation of data, Inferential statistics including probability theory, probability distributions, sampling distributions and parameter estimation; hypotheses testing; simple and multiple linear regression and correlation; time-series analysis and forecasting for cross section and longitudinal data; index numbers.

  • Economic Principles and Decision Making | ECON6000
    The 21st century business professional operates in an increasingly complex, competitive, turbulent and international environment and, as such, professionals must leverage sound economic reasoning to evaluate and resolve business problems in real time. This subject integrates concepts of managerial economics into a more research and analysis based structure, where students make managerial decisions based on their findings. Students also learn to identify and understand the limits of decision-making in general, and to understand the role that risk and uncertainty play in affecting decision outcomes. This unit introduces students briefly to quantitative data analysis to enhance their skills in both qualitative and quantitative reasoning.
  • Management Perspectives | MGMT6012

    We recommend you complete this subject towards the beginning of your MBA. The unit challenges you to think differently about your organisational experiences, to look at them through a variety of lenses, and to explore different ways by which you can influence people within the organisation and have an impact through your function as a manager. A key skill underpinning this is the ability to receive and respond to feedback, to look at data in a number of different ways to find alternative meanings and create different patterns of behaviour. The book ‘Images of Organisation’ explores the notion of the organisation through a range of metaphors; by exploring these metaphors you can gain different insights into your organisation and start to play with different interpretations and understandings of how we experience the world.

  • What are the admissions requirements for international students?
    Overseas Year 12 equivalent applicants who have completed a secondary school qualification from an overseas institution, will have their application assessed by the International Admissions team to determine equivalency with the Australian secondary school certificate.  International students will also have to satisfy minimum English language proficiency requirements.     Torrens University Australia no longer considers ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) as our primary entry requirement. We have removed ATAR as the key admissions criteria for applicants aiming to study at Torrens University Australia. We strongly believed an alternative to the ATAR system should be found, which more broadly assesses students, especially when soft skills are emerging as important employability attributes. So, students with a recent secondary school education are now considered for admission if they have a Year 12 (Australian secondary school) certificate.

    Yes, course credit is available upon application and academic approval.

    If you have already completed a qualification or have relevant work experience, you may be able to receive credits towards your degree. This credit can take the form of credit transfer, block credit or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

  • I don’t have a portfolio and I want to study a degree. What can I do?

    If you have met the entry requirement for the course, you do not need to submit a design portfolio.

    If you can’t meet the entry requirement and don’t have a portfolio, you will need to show evidence of prior industry/work experience OR have completed or partially completed study from an accredited institution to gain entry into the course.

  • I have a portfolio but haven’t completed a Higher School Certificate or equivalent. How can I gain entry into a degree?

    We offer several pathway options for students who have not completed a Higher School Certificate or equivalent.

    For some courses, entry can be achieved by undertaking a diploma course first (pathway criteria applies), and on successful completion of the diploma you can credit this study towards completion of a degree. Mature-aged students (21 and over) are also welcome to apply directly based on work experience and/or an existing portfolio.   • What makes a good portfolio?

    A good portfolio should include 6-10 pieces of original creative work and provide evidence of both your creativity and skill.

  • Am I eligible for FEE-HELP?

    To get a FEE-HELP loan, you must:

    • be an Australian citizen and study at least part of your course in Australia, or
    • be a New Zealand Special Category visa (SCV) holder or permanent humanitarian visa holder and meet the residency requirements.
    • be enrolled in a fee-paying place at a provider that offers FEE-HELP loans
    • be enrolled in an eligible course at your provider by the census date (your provider can tell you if your course is eligible)
    • submit the Request for FEE-HELP form to your provider by the census date
    • not have already borrowed up to your HELP loan limit.

    Permanent residents can only get FEE-HELP for approved bridging studies.

    If you are studying at a non-university, you will also need to meet the ‘pass rate’ requirements.

    If you receive an offer from Torrens University Australia, and you meet the eligibility requirements, you may be eligible for FEE-HELP. You will need to complete a Commonwealth Assistance Form if you want to defer payment of some, or all, of your tuition fees. You will need to quote your tax file number or provide a Certificate of Application for a Tax File Number. The form must be completed before the due date.

    For 2020, the HELP loan limit is $106,319 for most students. The Australian Government publishes the HELP Loan limit on their website.

    FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible fee-paying students to pay their tuition costs. Eligible students can borrow up to the FEE-HELP limit to pay their tuition fees. Note: Any loan fees that were applied to study prior to January 1, 2019 will not count towards your FEE-HELP limit.

    Students repay the loan to the Australian Government through the tax system once a student reaches the minimum income threshold level for repayment, which for 2019-20 is $45,881.

  • What is FEE-HELP?

    FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible full-fee-paying students pay their tuition costs.

    You must be studying at an approved FEE-HELP provider in order to access a FEE-HELP loan, such as Torrens University Australia.

    A FEE-HELP loan does not cover costs like accommodation, laptops or textbooks, and must be repaid once you start earning above a certain income threshold.
