The focus of this subject is on providing fundamental concepts and context for students to enrich their mastery in subsequent studies while developing as a reflective practitioner. Students will examine the functional operations of business and the environments in which it operates. This may include analysing the economic, social, political, legal, technological and ethical influences on contemporary businesses. Students will also examine the viewpoints of internal and external stakeholders.

This subject introduces you to the concepts of business communications and transferrable academic skills. This subject presents an analysis of the types of communication processes expected in industry, which occur in the internal and external business environment, including an examination of the theoretical underpinnings of communication in business. Contracts and Procurement | PROJ6004

Procurement and contracts are integral to successful project management. In this course, students learn about planning for purchases and acquisitions, requests for proposal, vendor selection, contract administration, and contract closure. Students learn how to approach key issues with regard to short and long‐term contracts, and small and large contracts. Topics covered include the examination of procurement strategies, responsiveness, and supplier‐client relationships. Students will also examine tendering, bidding and order management processes, relevant legal and commercial implications, as well as managing the relationship between buyer and seller, assessing vendor performance, contract change control, and conflict resolution.

This subject introduces you to the nature and importance of concepts that go beyond The Triple Constraint of time, scope and cost. Specific topics include; portfolio management lifecycles; resource management; and change management. You will learn to assess and evaluate the performance of multiple projects and programs, and how to apply a range of tools and techniques when managing project portfolios, specifically considering strategic management, and benefits to the organisation.
Engineering Sustainability | MEM601

In this subject, students will gain an insight into engineering sustainability, its importance and challenges, and the role and responsibilities of engineers who contribute to organisational sustainability. This subject introduces students to environmental issues and associated sustainability challenges with a focus on sustainable engineering management practices in areas of operations, maintenance, workplace safety, managing hazards, innovation and product development. Students will apply tools and methodologies, such as lifecycle analysis and circular economy approaches, to define and solve complex, real-world sustainability problems in engineering contexts. Students will also learn about best practices in sustainability approaches and processes, and develop strategically focused environmental plans and actions in an ethical way to ensure environmental compliance of organisations.

In this subject, students will develop an understanding of risk and the systematic and effective governance and management of risk in engineering practice, including engineering projects, workplace safety, hazard reduction, design, research and development, and innovation. This subject covers a range of risk management standards, tools, feasibility assessments, and analytical methods to improve strategic and operational decision-making in identifying, prioritising, mitigating, developing, implementing and evaluating risk management processes. Students will learn about developing and managing strategic innovation and technology, intellectual property protection of technology, and the integration of technology strategy with business strategy. In this subject, students will learn to formulate novel and competitive solutions to complex business problems utilising technology to ensure short-term competitive advantage and long-term capability development. This knowledge is applied in organisational decision-making to achieve strategic and operational objectives. Implications of policy issues related to strategy in the context of engineering and technological organisations, including external strategic alliances and partnerships, will also be explored. These impacts will be considered in relation to external influences arising from the economic, political and cultural environment.

This subject follows a practical and human centred approach, underpinned by design thinking and problem-solving methodologies, leading to positive -organisational performance and change. You will demonstrate an enterprise’s Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and present it to discerning investors. You will apply an entrepreneurial framework that includes business model generation, systematic research, competitor and financial analysis, leading to a potentially investor ready enterprise that stands up to market expectations. In addition, guided by industry mentors this subject will help you understand and address the practical challenges of working within the global -environment, analyse and reflect on different entrepreneurial business strategies, explore diverse funding strategies, as well as incorporate theoretical discussions on major trends and issues in the -economy. Entry to this subject is by invitation based on expressions of interest.

This subject gives students a fundamental understanding of Cloud Computing. They are able to understand how the cloud computing infrastructure has evolved from the traditional IT infrastructure and what business advantages it brings. Students will also learn the different Cloud Segments and Cloud Deployment models and the key players in the market. The subject also provides a knowledge of Cloud Services and Cloud Security to the students.
Human Centred Design | HCD402

This subject helps students explore several important fields of general inquiry pertaining to significant intellectual issues related to human beings so they can view everyday problems and formulate solutions in new ways. Broadly, the subject covers the theory of knowledge, human cognition, ethical and moral values, analysis of human history, critical analysis, appreciation of literature and arts and social interaction among human beings through a technological context. Human Centred Design is to give students an appreciation of the factors that influence human behaviour and interactions so that they can apply specialised skills to help solve problems that affect diverse societies.
Intelligent Systems | ISY503

This subject aims to give a broad introduction of intelligent systems, that is, how technologically advanced machines perceive and respond to the world around them. Discussion will focus on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) concepts and classifications are used to design intelligent systems. Overview of AI topics such as representation, reasoning, search methods, intelligent agents, learning, uncertainties and probabilities, perception and action, and communication are presented. It also includes discussions of AI classifications such as Machine Learning, Robotic, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, Expert Systems, Computer Vision, and how they are used to make intelligent systems. This subject also enables students to understand the particular ethical issues that AI presents and how it can be used to benefit society.
Software Development Management | SDM404

In this subject the students are introduced to the main project management principles and modern software project management practices. During the subject, the different methods for managing and optimising the software development process are discussed along with the different techniques for performing each phase of the software development life cycle.
Economic Principles | ECO601

Management makes rational decisions that take cognisance of the complex competitive and often volatile economic environment in which a business operates. In this subject, you will critically assess the micro and macroeconomic context needed for making these decisions. You will evaluate how institutions, particularly the government and the Central Bank, shape and constrain the environment. You will critically assess the potential impact of regulatory and economy-wide changes to business environments, and will apply economic models to make decisions about the optimal allocation of business resources. In your evaluation of the macroeconomic environment, you will consider key variables such as GDP, inflation, unemployment, trade balance and exchange rate and will acknowledge how the authorities apply fiscal and monetary policies in an attempt to achieve sound macroeconomic management.
Introduction to Financial Accounting | ACC601

This subject will introduce you to the role and purpose of accounting processes, systems and the regulatory and ethical frameworks. You will gain an understanding about processes for identifying, measuring, recording and communicating financial information thorough the financial reports of different business types, such as sole traders and companies. The double-entry accounting knowledge will be developed using both manual and computerised accounting systems. This subject will introduce the conceptual framework of accounting and the code of ethics for professional accountants which will set you up for success in later accounting subjects. You will study the full accounting cycle and apply it to key areas such as cash management, non-current assets, accounts receivables and payables.
Financial Accounting and Reporting | ACC602

This subject expands on foundational financial accounting concepts and practices, advancing your understanding of key competencies and contemporary trends in financial accounting. Enhance your understanding of the Australian regulatory and ethical environment for financial reporting, along with the purpose and interpretation of accounting standards (AASB) and its equivalent international Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). You will critique selected accounting standards in areas such as revenue, assets, and liabilities, and evaluate how these standards influence the preparation of General-Purpose Financial Statements (GPFS) of reporting entities. These learnings will be demonstrated in your ability to critically reflect on the importance of regulations to accounting practice through written and practical software-based assessments.
Advanced Financial Reporting | ACC603

This subject will continue to apply Australian and International Financial Reporting Standards, as you critically analyse and evaluate financial reporting issues for public listed companies such as foreign currency and investment in associates. You will learn to prepare consolidated general-purpose financial statements, and evaluate accounting policies and their limitations, using professional judgement. You will utilise your communication skills as you explain the concepts and theory within practical case studies.
Social Enterprise | DSGN6031

The theoretical base of this subject focuses on developing the students’ understanding of the fundamental contemporary theories of social entrepreneurship and a variety of applicable business models. The course will explore cross discipline material encompassing design, business and technology and how to acquire and combine knowledge and skills in all 3 areas to amplify the potential for success in 21st century society. At the core of this subject will be a focus on customer experience design, both theory and skill, and why user centric principles are increasingly used in business today. Students will explore the application of entrepreneurship business strategies and apply this knowledge in a philanthropic context and come up with solution to a real world problem they can execute to the pitch ready stage for investment. The project will entail some type of ‘design for good’ aspect in either a profit or non-for-profit business model. Students will be expected to think critically as they evaluate complex ideas and learn the patterns, frameworks and mechanics or storytelling, behavior design, game design and platform design.

Before you begin your application to study as an international student, check that you meet the requirements listed below.

Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree (AQF 7) or above from an Australian University or an equivalent overseas higher education qualification
OR
Five (5) years of analytics experience or equivalent professional business experience.

Equivalent IELTS 6.5 (Academic) with no skills band less than 6.0.

International students must not enrol in more than one-third (33%) of online subjects over their course, and must study at least one face-to-face subject each study period. Can I get course credit for previous experience?

Yes, course credit is available for most courses upon application and academic approval (excluding Higher Degree by Research programs). 

If you have already completed a qualification or have relevant work experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course. This credit can take the form of credit transfer, block credit or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).  Review our Course Credits page or chat to our Future Student Advisors.
What are Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT)? How do I apply?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises experience, previous study and qualifications, and other forms of informal and non-formal learning, to determine if you meet course requirements.

If you have relevant qualifications or experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course and a reduction in tuition costs.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

Torrens University has a wide range of scholarship options to support new, returning, international and Australian students. They all include a reduction in tuition fees, and some scholarships include a mentoring component with our industry partners.

Domestic students

When you speak to our Future Student Advisors, let them know you wish to be considered for a scholarship in your application form. They will show you how to apply for a scholarship.

International students

What if I don’t meet the entry criteria for a degree?

Torrens University Australia has a range of application pathways to help you gain entry into our degrees based on different criteria.

Am I eligible for FEE-HELP?
If you are a domestic student attending university or an approved higher education provider, you can get a FEE-HELP loan to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

You are eligible for FEE-HELP assistance for a unit of study (i.e. subject) if you:

Undertake study with an approved provider.

Meet the citizenship and residency requirements:

An Australian citizen or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the long-term residency criteria and who will undertake, in Australia, at least one unit of study contributing to your course; OR

A permanent humanitarian visa holder who will be a resident in Australia for the duration of your unit; OR

Are a permanent visa holder who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be a resident in Australia for the duration of the study.

Enrolled in an eligible unit of study by the census date for the unit.

Have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit.
