This subject introduces the student to the foundations of business. The focus of this subject is on providing fundamental concepts and context for students to enrich their mastery in subsequent studies while developing as a reflective practitioner. Students will examine the functional operations of business and the environments in which it operates. This may include analysing the economic, social, political, legal, technological and ethical influences on contemporary businesses. Students will also examine the viewpoints of internal and external stakeholders.
Business Communications | MGT502

This subject introduces you to the concepts of business communications and transferrable academic skills. This subject presents an analysis of the types of communication processes expected in industry, which occur in the internal and external business environment, including an examination of the theoretical underpinnings of communication in business. Emphasis is placed on writing skills, reports and presentations and on using technology to communicate. The subject introduces you to research skills, information literacy, critical analysis, writing and language techniques.
Principles of Project Management | PROJ6000

This subject introduces you to the practice of contemporary project management and its relevance in industry. You will be introduced to fundamental concepts of project management, project definition and project delivery methods. Contemporary project management methodologies will be examined in the context of industry best practice. An overview of industry standard tools and techniques required to manage projects successfully throughout a project life cycle will be provided. This includes industry terminology and the rationale behind the commencement of a project.
Project Planning and Budgeting | PROJ6002

Understanding the relationships between operational factors and projects is a core skill to be effective in the project management landscape. This subject focuses on an in-depth understanding in project planning and budgeting. The project planning emphasises developing effective management plans for scope, time, cost, resources and quality to deliver successful projects. You will critically analyse and apply appropriate tools, techniques, processes and methods to create different plans and effectively communicate them to diverse groups of stakeholders.
Project Execution and Control | PROJ6003

This subject will equip you with the knowledge and skills to manage projects and communicate objectives to diverse stakeholders. You will evaluate and apply a range of different tools, techniques and methods to monitor and control local and global projects. This includes managing changes, risks and quality, measuring project progress, and developing communication strategies to ensure that tasks are executed as planned for successful project completion.
Contracts and Procurement | PROJ6004

Procurement and contracts are integral to successful project management. In this course, students learn about planning for purchases and acquisitions, requests for proposal, vendor selection, contract administration, and contract closure. Students learn how to approach key issues with regard to short and long‐term contracts, and small and large contracts. Topics covered include the examination of procurement strategies, responsiveness, and supplier‐client relationships. Students will also examine tendering, bidding and order management processes, relevant legal and commercial implications, as well as managing the relationship between buyer and seller, assessing vendor performance, contract change control, and conflict resolution.
Integrated Project Management - PROJ6017 / PROJ6001

In this subject, you will demonstrate advanced knowledge founded on application of the integrative nature of project management. You will deepen your knowledge and develop your skills to coordinate and implement various project change management processes and activities. You will apply advanced tools and techniques to holistically consolidate the project lifecycle within local and global contexts and evaluate enterprise environmental factors (EEF) influencing project outcomes and optimise project benefit realisation.
Management, People and Teams | MGT600

This subject introduces you to how organisational behaviour, politics, dynamics and environments impact on the role and legitimacy of management. Constraints that managers and emerging leaders face in developing strategies to leverage advantages and overcome barriers in organisations and projects will be explored. You will identify, analyse and make effective decisions to resolve people-related issues, lead and manage change, facilitate employee development, performance and sustain effective teams in complex and diverse global operating environments.

This subject introduces you to the nature and importance of concepts that go beyond The Triple Constraint of time, scope and cost. Specific topics include; portfolio management lifecycles; resource management; and change management. You will learn to assess and evaluate the performance of multiple projects and programs, and how to apply a range of tools and techniques when managing project portfolios, specifically considering strategic management, and benefits to the organisation.
Project Management Capstone | PROJ6016

The Project Management Capstone subject is the culmination of your learning and is designed to facilitate project-integrated practice to real world scenarios. This subject enables you to demonstrate your ability to think critically and strategically in order to apply contemporary project management methodologies within your chosen project. You will apply investigative and advanced concepts, theories and knowledge of project management practice to initiate a project that has real-world consequences, one that will make an impact on the profession in your chosen community or sphere of influence. The project is to be practical- or research based and to make a contribution to theory or practice.

In this subject, students explore a variety of business process management theories and systems, including quality control, IT and management theories. Promising technologies for next generation e-business and enterprise systems will be particularly discussed and practical tools used in enterprises, eg. SAP, Oracle applications, will be demonstrated. This subject also emphasises the integration of software techniques and relationship to building an interface that business managers can use.
Project Management Application: Construction | PROJ6010

In this subject, students are prepared for the rigours of managing construction projects by allowing them to attain proficiency in managing risk and understanding resource management, health and safety, supply chain logistics and contractual implications. Students examine the process, nature, and market factors that impact contemporary construction projects, and identify the practical and commercial aspects in the project life cycle. Current and recent developments within the sector will be explored and the fundamentals of construction business decisions will be analysed.
Integrated Infrastructure Project Management | PROJ6011

In this subject, students examine how infrastructure projects interact with society and the environment. Complex challenges involved in managing large public infrastructure systems in the 21st century are investigated while subject matters such as financial sustainability, environmental impact factors and management approaches are explored. Students evaluate the role and technical constraints of governmental agencies and other stakeholder groups, and learn how to balance the need for securing vital infrastructure and providing cost effective services for the public.

In this subject you will build upon your current self-understanding to develop your strategic and ethical leadership capability. You will explore your key formative experiences and self-image using the techniques of reflective research, psychometric assessment and support from a mentoring partner. Develop your emotional competency to be authentic, confident and resilient in your leadership practices. Contract, tort, intellectual property, agency and employment law are considered, as well as means and methods of considering dispute resolution. Benchmarking and the ability to collect, analyse and present benchmarking data to influence organisational decision making is a core competence for many organisations. Technology impacts on most everything that we do in organisations, how we do deliver and perform, and how efficiently we manage our operations. Technology strategy therefore focuses on making the right decisions about the deployment of technology in line with business strategy and the risks associated with making the wrong technology decisions. The subject employs a range of research methods to draw up scenarios for decision making, and requires the students to present the case for a technology innovation strategy to a board of stakeholders. This subject will introduce you to database fundamentals. You will learn about creating, storing, and managing data in an organisational context. You will explore relational database design and modelling techniques. Including how to resolve data anomalies and the process of data management. Key topic areas covered in this subject are normalisation, SQL and emerging trends in database technology.
Microservices Architecture | MIS603

This subject introduces students to microservices architecture within the context of cloud computing models. The emergence of these techniques of building applications is directly related to innovations in the areas of cloud computing and platforms. In this subject, the focus will be on the evolution from more traditional approaches to microservices architecture. Core concepts related to the principles and practices of microservices will be reviewed.

This subject introduces you to activities, techniques, and methodologies a business analyst uses to elicit, analyse, model, document and maintain requirements throughout a project. Systems Analysis and Design | MIS605

This subject introduces students to activities, techniques, and methodologies a systems analyst uses to design information systems that, when built, enhance the organisation’s ability to meet its business goals via available technology. These include define requirements for system, model high-level behaviours of system, and design blueprint, that is, planning and implementation and will move through object-oriented approaches to analysis and design, the transformation of user requirements to system design. User empathy is promoted in this subject, using the unified modelling language (UML).
Cybersecurity | MIS607

Information is a vital organisational asset. Information systems store, process and exchange information, and most economic sectors are dependent on electronic and automated systems. Interconnectivity is important for many organisations, but this also increases the exposure to adverse events, necessitating the need for thorough information security management. This subject builds upon fundamental information security concepts, including the management of information systems that affect organisational information security: identity management, authentication, access control, monitoring, risk management, incident response and disaster recovery. Since cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility, having the basic knowledge to prevent attacks, mitigate risk, and get up to speed with best practice cyber governance is an essential ingredient to succeed in today’s digital world.
Agile Project Management | MIS608

Progressing from traditional project management frameworks this subject focuses on Agile project management, Agile project management methodology, the principles of Agile, and Agile techniques. This subject will be based on a foundation of the 4 core values and 12 guiding principles of Agile as laid out by the agile manifesto. Students will develop an understanding of Agile concepts, tools and techniques: Scrum and Kanban, Roadmap planning, Program increments, Sprints and daily scrums and the Agile roles within teams. Some of the leading Agile frameworks will be discussed so that students have an understanding of some of the different philosophies, which support the Agile continuous delivery pipeline. Points of origin in Lean practice and the relationship between Agile and DevOps will also be covered to help students orient themselves in the broader emerging landscape of projects and software development landscape.
Enterprise Development Unit | EDU600

This subject follows a practical and human centred approach, underpinned by design thinking and problem-solving methodologies, leading to positive -organisational performance and change. You will demonstrate an enterprise’s Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and present it to discerning investors. You will apply an entrepreneurial framework that includes business model generation, systematic research, competitor and financial analysis, leading to a potentially investor ready enterprise that stands up to market expectations. In addition, guided by industry mentors this subject will help you understand and address the practical challenges of working within the global -environment, analyse and reflect on different entrepreneurial business strategies, explore diverse funding strategies, as well as incorporate theoretical discussions on major trends and issues in the -economy. Entry to this subject is by invitation based on expressions of interest.
Engineering Sustainability | MEM601

In this subject, students will gain an insight into engineering sustainability, its importance and challenges, and the role and responsibilities of engineers who contribute to organisational sustainability. This subject introduces students to environmental issues and associated sustainability challenges with a focus on sustainable engineering management practices in areas of operations, maintenance, workplace safety, managing hazards, innovation and product development. Students will apply tools and methodologies, such as lifecycle analysis and circular economy approaches, to define and solve complex, real-world sustainability problems in engineering contexts. Students will also learn about best practices in sustainability approaches and processes, and develop strategically focused environmental plans and actions in an ethical way to ensure environmental compliance of organisations.
Engineering Risk Management | MEM602

In this subject, students will develop an understanding of risk and the systematic and effective governance and management of risk in engineering practice, including engineering projects, workplace safety, hazard reduction, design, research and development, and innovation. This subject covers a range of risk management standards, tools, feasibility assessments, and analytical methods to improve strategic and operational decision-making in identifying, prioritising, mitigating, developing, implementing and evaluating risk management processes. Students will learn to develop risk management plans, apply methodologies to evaluate and improve reliability and safety, and apply risk assessment techniques. Lastly, existing and emerging technologies are discussed and how they can be developed and used for the mitigation and management of risk.
Engineering Strategy | MEM603

This subject introduces students to strategic perspectives on issues concerning engineering organisations globally and domestically. Students will learn about developing and managing strategic innovation and technology, intellectual property protection of technology, and the integration of technology strategy with business strategy. In this subject, students will learn to formulate novel and competitive solutions to complex business problems utilising technology to ensure short-term competitive advantage and long-term capability development. This knowledge is applied in organisational decision-making to achieve strategic and operational objectives. Implications of policy issues related to strategy in the context of engineering and technological organisations, including external strategic alliances and partnerships, will also be explored. These impacts will be considered in relation to external influences arising from the economic, political and cultural environment.
Accounting Information Systems | ACCT6001

This subject covers the nature, role and benefits of information systems in business and how it can assist in management decision-making. Focus is given in the Accounting Information Systems. The business processes, internal controls, and auditing of accounting information systems, ethics and cybercrime are also explored.
Social Behaviour and Cultural Factors in Public Health | PUBH6000

Students in this subject explore the field and practice of public health. They learn to identify and analyse major social, behavioural and cultural factors affecting population health outcomes. These factors include social determinants of health (e.g. gender, socioeconomic status and social capital), community capacity, resilience, age, race/ethnicity, the environment and behavioural risk. Students explore medical, social and behavioural approaches to health promotion and public health interventions. They analyse current and emerging theoretical and conceptual frameworks from the social, behavioural and medical sciences. Students apply these frameworks and other theories presented in the subject, to intervention strategies and/or program initiatives that address current public health issues.
Health Policy and Advocacy | PUBH6001

Policy agenda-setting, implementation and evaluation are crucial to the improvement of the health of populations. Policymaking is not a straightforward process. Political ideologies and values, as well as power, coalition building and the media, play key roles in what becomes public policy. In this subject, students will learn about policy agenda-setting, development, implementation and evaluation as well as critical perspectives of policymaking. The subject introduces theories of policy making and applies knowledge of the policy process to public health problems. Students will analyse and critique issues in contemporary Australian health policy and the various stakeholders and partnerships formed in the policy process. They will examine the role of evidence and advocacy in policy agenda setting. Students will also learn about a range of advocacy strategies including media advocacy and community empowerment strategies for the development and implementation of policy.
Global and Environmental Health Issues | PUBH6002

This subject provides an overview of global and environmental factors that affect the health and safety of communities from the global to the local scale. It considers the ways in which globalisation has affected the social, economic and political determinants of health, including trends in communicable and non-communicable diseases at a global level, and the relationships between foreign policy, trade, security and development. The relationship between issues such as global health and foreign policy, trade, security and development are explored along with global health governance and financing mechanisms. Students also examine causal links between chemical, physical, and biological hazards in the environment and their impact on health, and the genetic, physiologic, and psychosocial factors that influence environmentally compromised health outcomes. This is applied to current solutions and considers new ways to address environmental threats, such as waste, water, air, vectors and global warming. Work health safety and environmental influences in the workplace and home are also explored.
Health Systems and Economics | PUBH6003

This subject explores the organisation of health systems, the financial and other resourcing requirements for planning and delivering effective public health programs, strategies and interventions, and the development and application of effective policies across a range of sectors that affect the health of populations. It introduces the discipline of economics as it applies to public health. Topics covered include health systems thinking and frameworks, the role of government in prevention and health promotion, models and debates regarding public health funding and investment, demand for public health programs, implications for equity, delivery, governance of public health programs and services, and economic analyses applied to public health systems and activities. Students consider current issues such as estimating expenditure on public health, “best buys” in public health, and the role of economic tools such as price subsidisation and commodity taxation in public health.
Social Enterprise | DSGN6031

The theoretical base of this subject focuses on developing the students’ understanding of the fundamental contemporary theories of social entrepreneurship and a variety of applicable business models. The course will explore cross discipline material encompassing design, business and technology and how to acquire and combine knowledge and skills in all 3 areas to amplify the potential for success in 21st century society. At the core of this subject will be a focus on customer experience design, both theory and skill, and why user centric principles are increasingly used in business today.
Students will explore the application of entrepreneurship business strategies and apply this knowledge in a philanthropic context and come up with solution to a real world problem they can execute to the pitch ready stage for investment. The project will entail some type of ‘design for good’ aspect in either a profit or non- for-profit business model.
The course will also cover the latest neuro-leadership principles and why EQ is just as important as IQ in both design and business. Students will be expected to think critically as they evaluate complex ideas and learn the patterns, frameworks and mechanics or storytelling, behaviour design, game design and platform design.
Students will be expected to:
• Identify and analyse a social problem that needs to be solved.
• Plan and progress an idea through a business development lifecycle.
• Conduct face to face user interviews utilising a self-constructed questionnaire.
• Synthesize and visualize quantitative and qualitative data in order to communicate the patterns they discover in the data collected.
• Learning the basics of using a business model and value proposition canvas as tools for design.
• Create, present, and communicate a professional-level business deck along with a functional prototype in order to demonstrate their understanding of theoretical and practical concepts.
• Learn and practice lean start-up and design thinking principles in the validation of their business idea along with validation of the prototype for the product or service they create.

What if  I don’t meet the entry criteria for a degree?

Am I eligible for FEE-HELP?
If you are a domestic student attending university or an approved higher education provider, you can get a FEE-HELP loan to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

You are eligible for FEE-HELP assistance for a unit of study (i.e. subject) if you:

Undertake study with an approved provider.

Meet the citizenship and residency requirements:

An Australian citizen or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the long-term residency criteria and who will undertake, in Australia, at least one unit of study contributing to your course; OR

A permanent humanitarian visa holder who will be a resident in Australia for the duration of your unit; OR

Are a permanent visa holder who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be a resident in Australia for the duration of the study.

Enrolled in an eligible unit of study by the census date for the unit.

Have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit.

Can I get course credit for previous experience?

Yes, course credit is available for most courses upon application and academic approval (excluding Higher Degree by Research programs). 

If you have already completed a qualification or have relevant work experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course. This credit can take the form of credit transfer, block credit or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Review our Course Credits page or chat to our Future Student Advisors.
What are Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT)? How do I apply?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises experience, previous study and qualifications, and other forms of informal and non-formal learning, to determine if you meet course requirements.

If you have relevant qualifications or experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course and a reduction in tuition costs.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

Torrens University has a wide range of scholarship options to support new, returning, international and Australian students. They all include a reduction in tuition fees, and some scholarships include a mentoring component with our industry partners.

Domestic students

When you speak to our Future Student Advisors, let them know you wish to be considered for a scholarship in your application form. They will show you how to apply for a scholarship.
