After an initial six years in public works, his career shifted when he became a systems engineer in a software products company. Since then, he has been involved in information and communication technology primarily as a Business Analyst.

By integrating real-world case studies and examples from his consultancy work, he enhances the learning experience for his students, making the material more relatable and bringing it to life.
This week, Walter has set aside some time to answer a few crucial questions about business analytics, his career, what a Business Analyst actually does every day, and how students can get ahead in this important field.
What have been some of the biggest moments, challenges and rewards of your business analytics career so far?
“With a career spanning over 40 years, I have experienced many pivotal roles and moments. One of the most significant decisions I made was transitioning from public works to a software products company. This allowed me to witness the evolution of information and communication technology, from the early days of personal computers to the development of the internet and cloud technologies.
Personally, the greatest challenge has been keeping pace with technological advances. I advocate for and am a life-long learner which is crucial nowadays.
Working with clients to ensure they reap the value and benefits of their investments has been both challenging and rewarding. I have overseen successful big-budget projects, including enterprise data warehouse system replacements, business intelligence system migrations, and solutions for financial crime operations.”

Drawing from over 40 years of experience, I aim to impart the skills, competencies, and knowledge expected of a professional business analyst.
I incorporate real-life examples from my career to elaborate on various topics, ensuring students gain practical insights.
This approach extends to assessments, helping students apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. What does a business analyst do day to day?
“In my ongoing role as a Business Analyst consultant at DXC Technology, I work closely with clients to understand their business needs and translate them into effective technology solutions. This involves conducting thorough analyses of business processes, identifying areas for improvement, and developing detailed requirements for various business and project initiatives.
I collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to ensure alignment between business goals and IT strategies, leveraging my expertise in business architecture and organisational change management (OCM). This role allows me to apply my extensive industry knowledge to drive successful transformations and deliver tangible business value to our clients.”
How do you bring your industry work into the classroom to the benefit of students? Is it hard to juggle these dual roles?
“As a Business Analyst consultant at DXC Technology, I work on diverse projects, helping clients optimise their business processes and implement effective solutions. This real-world experience allows me to bring practical insights into the classroom, enriching the learning experience for my students.
I also incorporate case studies and examples from my current consultancy work to illustrate key concepts, making the material more relatable and engaging.
Balancing these dual roles requires effective time management and prioritisation. I ensure that my consulting work and teaching responsibilities complement each other, allowing me to stay current with industry trends while providing students with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills. This synergy enhances my effectiveness in both roles and ensures that students benefit from a practitioner’s perspective.”
