Fundamentals of Management | ABS101

Management is a fluid process that aims to bring together the resources available to an organisation in order to achieve a goal or set of goals. Hence, in this subject, students will come to understand the importance and objectives of organisational management. This will include the various core frameworks required to design and setup organisations, and the tools and techniques proved effective for the assessment and improvement of organisational performance. The subject will focus on both classical and modern fundamental principles of management.
Fundamentals of Marketing | ABS102

In this subject, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of marketing, its function in business and the approaches to marketing management. A key component for successful commercial ventures is the ability to meet consumer needs, whilst delivering unique value. As such, sound understanding of customers and the markets they collectively represent, is an important skillset for aspiring entrepreneurs and marketing professionals. Students will also learn how marketing has evolved in line with digital capabilities as well as why many fundamental theories remain unchanged. You will develop the ability to articulate basic marketing goals and plans.
Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship | ABS103

This subject introduces students to what it means to be an entrepreneur, the fundamental tools of the trade and the role of entrepreneurship both as it has been and as it currently is. Students will be introduced to the theoretical concepts of entrepreneurial venture creation in a range of contexts. In line with the principle of ‘starting with the end in mind’, this subject provides students with an overview of all key aspects of entrepreneurship and business model development.
Fundamentals of Project Management | ABS104

In this subject, students will learn what constitutes a project, the various components and stages of a project, as well as core competencies and approaches of an effective project manager. Taking a broad perspective, this unit introduces students to the similarities of projects between industries, as well as many of the nuances that may be found in particular industries.
Fundamentals of Leadership | ABS105

In this subject, students will be introduced to leadership theories and perspectives, and begin to explore these different approaches and what they mean for business performance. In particular, students will learn about traditional and emergent leadership styles, impacts on organisational culture, associated power relations, global leadership factors and issues regarding the development of leaders.
Business Model Analysis | ABS106

In this subject, students will be introduced to the core concepts of a business model and the importance of each in creating unique value and sustainable business success. In addition to the foundational understanding of core components of business models, students will develop skills in assessing current and future risk and opportunity of a business model, based on strategic market analysis and forward planning.
Corporate Structuring and Business Law | ABS202

In this subject, students will develop an understanding of business law in relation to structuring a business along with the legal frameworks associated with operating a business. Students will develop an understanding of various legal business structuring options, including the benefits and drawbacks of each, in addition to the processes involved in setting up the respective structures. Beyond this, students will also develop the skills and understanding to interpret basic business laws, regulations and scenarios as they relate to business operations.
Digital Business and Disruption | AB203

Technology has changed the game. Whether it be through the emergence of new online platforms, different ways of providing services due to the advent of mobile applications, or through the transformation of traditional business models, digital business practices have become both desired and necessary. As a manager, marketer, or entrepreneur, it is vital that you understand the benefits and limitations of digital business so that you too can be more effective and innovative. In completing this unit, you will be able to effectively identify key opportunities and strategies to maximise business performance through the use of digital technology.
Managing Money and Finance | ABS204

In this subject, students will develop the foundational accounting knowledge and skills required to prepare and interpret basic financial reports for organisations of varying maturity. Students will also explore a variety of accounting theories that underpin business. In addition, they will develop the capability to identify financial trends of note, in order to make recommendations to decision makers of financial changes that should be made.
Big Data | ABS207

In this subject, students will be introduced to the concepts of big data and how it can be applied in modern business contexts. Following on from developing their understanding of the various methodologies for collecting and interpreting Big Data, students will work on its application to improve business performance. Students completing this subject will have a demonstrated capacity to identify and articulate appropriate metrics for measuring business performance across all departments in varying business types and thus, how to identify pertinent trends to overall business performance.

Practicing Leadership | ABS205

In this subject, students will develop their theoretical understanding of leadership in a general business context, and how different leadership models apply in varying types of organisations. Students will investigate the fundamental differences between management and leadership, as well as how leadership capability is developed in individuals and organisations. Students will explore the underpinnings of organisational culture and learn how the traits of an individual leader can influence the overall culture of a business. In addition, students will begin to articulate their own leadership style, linking it to relevant theoretical approaches.
Design Thinking for Business | ABS206

In this subject, students will be introduced to design thinking and why this modern business concept is useful and valuable to all kinds of businesses. In particular, students will engage with the design thinking process - from ideation through to evaluation - as well as exploring the role it plays in current businesses, the theory and philosophy behind design thinking, and the different approaches to design thinking. Students will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge and will engage in a design thinking process for an existing organisation, or their own venture.
Social Enterprise | ABS208

In this subject, students will be introduced to the concepts of social entrepreneurship and learn how these differ from those of commercial entrepreneurship. Students will also be introduced to the various business models and opportunities available to social entrepreneurs. In addition, they will learn about the unique challenges these organisations face in launching, growing and operationing such an enterprise. Students will also gain an understanding of the importance of social impact outcomes.
Applied Entrepreneurship - Concept Development and Validation | ABS210

In this subject, students will learn how to apply the skills required of aspiring entrepreneurs. Students will undertake detailed research and planning, as well as engage in practical creative exercises to create, explore and validate conceptual venture ideas. Through the completion of this subject, students will create a draft business model for a new venture.
The Global Economy | ABS301

In this subject, students will come to understand the new paradigm of business that is the global economy, and the resulting implications for both established and new organisations. Students will develop their understanding and ability to identify drivers of global change as well as their ability to articulate and interpret the resulting global trends that represent strategic and operational challenges and opportunities.
Advanced Digital Marketing | ABS306

In this subject, students will be introduced to into the various digital marketing strategies that have rapidly evolved in recent years. Students will develop the skills and understanding required for designing and implementing these strategies for various organisation types and stages of maturity, utilising a plethora of modern technologies. In addition, students will develop the skills required to effectively assess and improve digital marketing campaigns as well as learn how digital marketing plays a crucial role in supporting more traditional techniques.
Management Strategy | ABS302

In this subject, students will develop their ability to design effective business strategies for organisations of varying types and stages of maturity. Through introduction to the fundamentals of management strategy, the evolution of strategy and a range of strategic methodologies, students will learn how to respond to specific business scenarios and design proactive strategies towards achieving business goals. In addition, students will investigate how organisations can proactively address their future success, through the effective use of trend analysis techniques. Students will develop their capabilities in line with the skills required in a digital economy.
Venture Capital Raising | ABS307

In this subject, students will develop the skills and understanding necessary to raise capital for new and existing ventures of various types and stages of maturity. In addition to understanding the various types of funding available and the benefits and drawbacks of each, students will be able to develop strategies to source and raise funds, with accurate venture valuations.

Managerial Communication | ABS107

In this subject, students will develop their understanding of the importance and various methods of business communications. Students will be introduced to methodologies and techniques in both formal and informal communication, and will develop their skills in selecting and developing appropriate communication methodologies for various business scenarios and objectives.
Competitive Market Positioning | ABS108

In this subject, students will build upon basic marketing strategy knowledge to develop a market positioning strategy. Students will be introduced to more complex theories and frameworks to support decision-making and positioning in competitive markets. Students will come to understand target audiences, market trends, market composition and competitor strategies to co-create unique brand narrative, personality and positioning.
Introduction to Innovation | ABS109

In this subject, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of innovation, its role within Entrepreneurship, as well as the key tools and methodologies effectively to foster innovation. In addition, students will explore the key differences between innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as the function of innovation within both new and established organisations. Throughout this subject students will develop the ability to inform basic innovation programs and innovation challenges faced by established organisations.
Product Management | ABS110

In this subject, students will develop a deep understanding of what makes up different product types. Students will develop their understanding of product lifecycles for both goods and services, and the various strategies that need to be developed to manage products through each stage. Students will also learn how to manage product groups, fostering sustainable customer value, and identify opportunities for product innovation.
Managing Diverse Workplaces | ABS303

In this subject, students will become introduced to the typical opportunities and challenges that come with teams made up of diverse backgrounds. Students will learn how such diversity can impact working styles and the type of management and leadership approaches required to build an empowered collaborative team. Through this subject students will further develop their management and leadership skills of inclusion and diversity to inform the effective management procedures and policies designed to create positive working environments.
Managing Employee Relations | ABS304

In this subject, students will be introduced to the regulations of employment across all types of staff. Students will develop their abilities in designing workforce policies and procedures in line with Australian law, to foster safe and enjoyable work environments. In addition, students will learn fundamental approaches to dealing with various staff challenges in the workplace.
Organisational Change | ABS305

In this subject, students will examine the foundational elements of organisational change management including the different dimensions and models of change. Discussions will focus on how politics, power, resistance, culture, and structure can impact organisations as they grow and change. Students will proactively plan effective leadership and communication strategies to implement and sustain an organisational change.
Integrated Marketing Communications | ABS308

In this subject, students will build on skills developed in previous subjects to further develop and explore the concepts and strategies of marketing communications. Students will develop and design strategies for communicating particular messages with particular customer segments, according to the broader business goals, utilising a variety of media and channels to maximise impacts. In addition, students will learn the foundations of brands and effective branding strategy.
Marketing of Services | ABS309

In this subject, students will develop knowledge of the marketing of services and how to apply this to achieve optimal business outcomes. This subject explores the basic mindset and toolset to approach any marketing challenges in changing service business environments. Student will develop knowledge and skills to identify, analyse and make effective marketing decisions in service contexts, including consumer behaviour, customer satisfaction and experiences.
Marketing Strategy and Planning | ABS310

In this subject, students will learn how to merge the broad array of skills they have developed, in order to design holistic marketing strategies. Students will learn to understand the relevance of broader business challenges, opportunities and goals, and marketing strategy, as well as learn how to work with management from other business functions in developing marketing plans.
Stakeholder Management | ABS311

In this subject, students will be given an introduction to the concepts of stakeholder management. Students will become exposed to the various categories of stakeholders and the respective expectations and impacts each can have. In doing so, students will gain understanding of the importance of stakeholder management across industries as well as the skill sets to develop effective stakeholder management strategies that take into account the various and discrete needs of stakeholder groups.

Admission criteria

Before you begin your application to study as a domestic student, check that you meet the requirements listed below.

Australian secondary school certificate, or equivalent;

Successful completion of a Vocational qualification (AQF Level 4), or above;

Successful completion of at least 0.25 EFTSL at AQF level 6, 0.5 EFTSL at AQF level 5 or above, or equivalent;

A minimum of successful completion of Year 10 or equivalent (e.g. Certificate 3) AND a minimum of 2 years of full-time relevant, cognate work experience demonstrated by a resume.

Minimum age of 17 AND successful completion of readiness assessment provided by the University.

What are Torrens University Australia’s ATAR requirements for domestic students?

Torrens University Australia no longer considers ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) as our primary entry requirement. We have removed ATAR as the key admissions criteria for applicants aiming to study at Torrens University Australia. We strongly believed an alternative to the ATAR system should be found, which more broadly assesses students, especially when soft skills are emerging as important employability attributes. So, students with a recent secondary school education are now considered for admission if they have a Year 12 (Australian secondary school) certificate. Exceptions may apply to some courses.
What if  I don’t meet the entry criteria for a degree?

If you are a domestic student attending university or an approved higher education provider, you can get a FEE-HELP loan to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

You are eligible for FEE-HELP assistance for a unit of study (i.e. subject) if you:

Undertake study with an approved provider.

Meet the citizenship and residency requirements:

An Australian citizen or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the long-term residency criteria and who will undertake, in Australia, at least one unit of study contributing to your course; OR

A permanent humanitarian visa holder who will be a resident in Australia for the duration of your unit; OR

Are a permanent visa holder who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be a resident in Australia for the duration of the study.

Can I get course credit for previous experience?

Yes, course credit is available for most courses upon application and academic approval (excluding Higher Degree by Research programs). 

If you have already completed a qualification or have relevant work experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course.
