Budding fashion entrepreneur's Vogue Australia scholarship journey

Danika Atkinson's story showcases the impact of pursuing one’s passion in the world of design. We spoke to her about her journey, from her initial discovery of the scholarship to the creative process behind her winning submission, and now looking ahead to her studies. Here’s how it all came together.

Discovering the Vogue Australia Design scholarship

Danika tells us that it was while diving into research on Fashion and Design course opportunities online that she stumbled upon the Vogue Australia Design scholarship. Immediately, she was thrilled by what the scholarship offered. Why? Because she knew the power of connection when starting out in a new field. Right away, Danika started brainstorming ideas for what would be her submission.

How to create a scholarship winning design submission

After countless hours brainstorming, Danika decided that as part of her Vogue Australia cover submission, she would address the intersection of AI and sustainable fashion. She was inspired by a recent sustainability documentary.

“I wanted to tackle a relevant and thought-provoking topic that resonates with today’s creatives,” Danika said.

Her design sought to visually articulate both the potential and the complexities surrounding these important issues, reflecting that her passion for fashion goes beyond aesthetics.

When hearing that she was the winner of the Trimester 3 2024 Vogue Australia Design scholarship, Danika was overwhelmed with emotion.

That moment reinforced a powerful lesson, that “taking chances can lead to incredible opportunities,” she remarked.

What Danika is looking forward to at Billy Blue

As Danika prepared to embark on her studies at Billy Blue College of Design, she was excited about learning from industry leaders and connecting with fellow creatives who share her passion for design.

Torn between fashion and visual design, Danika decided on the Diploma of Graphic Design. The deciding factor was that at Billy Blue students across all disciplines get to collaborate across subjects, and so developing her core design capabilities she is also able to tailor her assessments to be fashion related, linking the two fields.

"The program aligns perfectly with my passion for design,” she said. “I believe it will equip me with the skills necessary to elevate my Design career and fashion business.

"I'm eager to immerse myself in an environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.”

Tips for future scholarship applicants

To anyone considering applying for the Vogue Australia scholarship or pursuing studies at Billy Blue, Danika's advice is simple: “Embrace your unique perspective and be fearless in your creativity. Believe in yourself and the journey you’re on; you never know where it might lead”.

“Don’t be afraid to tackle topics that matter to you – your passion will shine through in your work”.

Danika adds that it’s important to understand what the scholarship judges value and to make sure your application shows that.

Throughout her journey, Danika has committed herself to taking chances and fully investing in her passions.

“You never know what doors may open for you. Most importantly, believe in yourself and trust the journey you’re on; it may lead you to places you never imagined.”
