Work integrated-learning

Our Faculty of Health offer the most up-to-date software, learning tools and facilities, so you start learning and training in healthcare environments from day one. For example, our state-of-the-art Nursing facilities incorporate simulation wards populated with high-fidelity mannequins.

You’ll also gain practical industry experience supporting real patients through internships and clinic placements. Our student-run campus clinic, The Practice Wellbeing Centre in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne is an industry-standard clinic open to the public so you can practise everything you learn under the supervision of our academics.

Catherine’s journey in naturopathy began in the community sector and progressed to vocational and higher education roles. Having practised as a naturopath in natural medicine and integrative health clinics since her graduation from ACNT in 1999, she has helped many clients gain better health outcomes. As an educator, Catherine is passionate about ensuring TUA courses have the highest educational standards and prepare students for careers in health.

Katie Canteri
Program Director
Katie is a registered nutritionist, accredited practising dietitian and committee member of the Nutrition Society of Australia Melbourne Group. Katie has a PhD in nutrition, focusing on dietary supplementation and metabolic syndrome, and has worked in nutrition for many years, with experience in aged care, clinical human research, skills education/presentation, content creation, support services and sales – experience she brings to her role at Torrens University. Her research interests include ageing, obesity and metabolic health, and public health nutrition, all of which are essential for future careers in health.

Lisa Casaneila headshot
Lisa Casanelia
Program Director
Lisa has a background in social science, musculoskeletal therapy clinical practice and public health, over more than 25 years of experience in clinical and education sectors. With a passion for human rights and social justice, public health was a natural progression. Lisa also believes in the importance of education as a fundamental social determinant of health, making her a strong proponent of the combination of education and health. She has been involved in managing education programs in both higher education and vocational education and training sectors for 20 years and is focused on supporting the academic success of students within public health programs.

Dr Sharyn Carnahan
Program Director (Acting)
Sharyn has been in education for over 35 years, firstly as a Health and Physical Education teacher before completing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science and PhD in Nutritional Physiology and Biochemistry. She has been in the tertiary sector for 10 years in numerous roles, such as tutor, demonstrator, lecturer, course co-ordinator and is currently the Acting Program Director for Health Science.

Stephen Mckenzie headshot
Stephen McKenzie
Head of Psychology
Stephen is a leading international expert in tertiary education, particularly in online education, and whole student success-based education. Stephen was previously a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological Sciences, University of Melbourne, where he developed a wide range of courses from micro certificate to Masters level, including wellbeing and mental health related courses. Prior to that Stephen was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University, where he co-led the development, implementation and research-evidence based advances of the Graduate Diploma of Psychology Advanced (GDPA), which became the largest fourth year Psychology course in Australia. Stephen is passionate about helping Torrens Psychology and Counselling students achieve their best possible academic, professional, wellbeing, and life outcomes.
