Meet our 2021 Vogue Australia scholarship winners

Vogue Scholarship

As part of our partnership with Vogue Australia, we're pleased to announce the recipients of four scholarships.

Billy Blue College of Design’s longstanding partnership with Vogue Australia is founded on a mutual love for design and innovation, and a shared commitment to fostering emerging talent. In 2021, we took our partnership a step further with the unveiling of our exclusive scholarship and mentoring program.  

Together, we searched for four high-achieving designers who had dreams of becoming the industry’s next big thing. Each scholarship recipient would receive 50% off their tuition fees and mentorship from a senior member of the iconic fashion mag – an opportunity that doesn’t come along every day. 

“We are thrilled to be part of this mentorship and hope they will acquire invaluable, industry experience that can contribute to their future careers,” said the Vogue Australia judging panel, comprising of Sandy Doa (Art Director, Vogue Living), Alex Mandy (Art Director, Vogue) and Arquette Cooke (Deputy Art Director, Vogue).

The response was amazing. We continue to be amazed by the talent out there, leaving no doubt that the creative industry is in good stead for the future.  

“It's wonderful and inspiring to see the breadth of young and emerging talent. There's no doubt the future is bright for design, fashion, and publishing after taking part in the selection process for the mentorship,” said the judging panel.

Now, we’re proud to announce our scholarship winners.  

Grace Childs, Bachelor of Fashion Marketing and Enterprise 

“I believe the mentoring program is a huge benefit of this scholarship as it allows students to gain real knowledge from someone who has established a career in not only the fashion industry, but with the biggest-selling fashion magazine worldwide.

Throughout covid designers and creators were faced with challenges which forced them to explore alternative routes to keep the engagement and relationships with their audience. During this time, we also saw a surge in the amount of time people spend on the internet which led to the rise of digital fashion. We found influencers attending fashion weeks in their own homes and designers using software such as CGI for their runways."

Sunday Salt, Bachelor of Communication Design

“As someone who has held a lifelong dedication to all things fashion and beauty, I could think of no better way to transform my passion into a career that I would truly love than through mentorship from each of these highly regarded institutions.

I have aimed to create visual captivation through various textures such as the paint strokes, superimposed flowers (relating to the ‘blossoming’ of the fashion industry in 2022 post global economic depression), and detailed fabrication of the dress, all of which also allude to the concept ‘From Renaissance to Runway’."

Tamlin Labutte-seddon, Bachelor of Interior Design (Residential) 

“The mentoring program is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It gives me a chance to showcase my creative ideas and design skills.
The concept behind my cover story is that ‘creation runs free’. The freedom to think and go in whichever direction you want creatively. My idea creates a dual perspective on both real and imaginary. Replacing a wild herd of wildebeest with furniture is a symbolic gesture to creation and how it is natural, pure and limitless."

Abby Adlington, Bachelor of Interior Design (Residential) 

“I know and understand the value of professional support. I would be honoured to receive guidance on making my way in the industry, and welcome support and constructive criticism from a mentor.

I used a photo of my parents’ building company, a beautiful bathroom renovation. Numbers and fonts are a powerful marketing tool to grab the audience’s attention and encourage readers to look inside. An example is the large bold number 20 and the cursive ‘simplicity’ in the bottom left corner. The colours I used for the text were vital for the colour scheme and resolution in the palette of the cover."
